Vinny created the topic: Floating plants

OK so as in all of my tanks I've had nitrate is a pain in my_____.. I do frequent water changes and I have plenty of filtration. Today I decided to buy some floating plants and throw them in. I don't know what type they are but can add pics if it matters. Main question is do plants really help or is "floating" plants not enough and or not big enough??? How long til results are yielded In lowering nitrate natural with the plant??

i don't know what kind of plant that is but it's doubtful that floating plants will make a noticeable difference in nitrates

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next

If you have enough plants then obviously that would help to reduce nitrate levels, after all nitrate is what plants feed on.

If you are finding it difficult to keep your nitrate levels at a low level then you should be asking yourself why this is. How often you carry out water changes? How many fish have you got? How much do you put in the tank every day? To be honest, it shouldn't be difficult to keep the nitrate levels at a low level, at least for a few days. Obviously if the tank isn't big enough, you're not carrying out enough water changes then you will have an uphill battle. You haven't said whether you have an Oscar. Floating plants may well help with the nitrate, but the chances are the Oscars will rip them to pieces, this will then only add to your problem because you will then get decaying vegetation which will only add to the nitrate.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)
