Nina_W created the topic: Chainmail

Anyone else on here make chainmail? I'd love to compare notes :)

Here's a shirt I made for Justin for Christmas a few years back, done in a oriental style (erm, with a lot of modern added in - like the double rings).
Here's me in it (I'm too tall for it, Justin is much shorter and much more broad-shouldered than me):

Here's it on the floor:

Laid out flat like this all chainmail looks shorter and fatter than it is. This thing is more or less the size of a medium t-shirt.

Here's some detail of the weave:

And over my hand:

Here's an action shot, just before a boffer fight at my birthday two years ago:

Here's my chainmail, for ren-faires etc. It's done in a traditional medieval weave, but it has much finer links than most people would have been able to afford back then - so it's a royal lady's mail, except that I copied the man's mail pattern. To be worn strictly under the outer garments, but over the undergarments. We do not want to appear vulgar, now.

Here's me in it:

And here's it laid out on the floor:

If I stretch it out, it can be the size of an XXL shirt, but really, it's best when it naturally bunches around you - much more comfortable.

Here's a detail shot:

And here's my hand under it, for scale:

***

My pet projects are usually not this large, though. I really love making various jewelery items, with really tiny rings. Here's what I'm working on now:

It will be a bracelet.

Blimey, that must take ages to put together. Is it stab proof :-)?

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Looks very nice Nina. That must take a lot of patience and time. So are you and your husband into the whole RPG and Larping ( ? ) thing ?

It does take a good long while, yes. But a bit every night and you get there :)

I haven't stabbed it myself, but a friend in chainmail was mugged by a guy with a knife, the guy tried stabbing him, but he just wouldn't start bleeding or screaming in agony - the chainmail was under his shirt. Our friend was too astonished to do much but stand there and gape, and the mugger decided he was a witchdoctor and ran off extremely frightened. So while I wouldn't recommend trying it for yourself, under the right circumstances it is stab-proof.

No more than doing water changes every day for discus - the results are worth it :)

Thanks Ben :) My little cousins think so too. It gets rather hot to wear, though. And heavy. Justin's one is about 8kgs, mine is about 9. Not so bad once you have it on, but after a few hours... erm... time for a sit.

Yes, but more so earlier. The LARP group in SA went from an emphasis on role play and an immersive world to an emphasis on hitting each other with spongey things. Now I like hitting people with a large, duct tape covered pool-noodle-and-pvc-pipe contraption quite a bit, but I much prefered the escape from the daily grind that the role play provided. So nowadays we do the craftsmanship things more than the actual events.

There are some shortcuts that let you weave a couple of rows at a time - it helps to get it done quickly :)

I played so much oblivion that I once ended up half way into a garden, trying to get at the nirnroot plant over there (we have plants that look like nirn) before I realised what I was up to. My sister is still laughing

Skyrim sucks you in. My brother in law, who only really plays fifa and such, started it on a dare and ended up taking a days leave because when he realised where he was, it was half past four the next morning. It's such a great game... it's the oscar fish of great games. Scratch that, it's the red oscar of great games.

Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone :)

I will take water changing a discus tank everyday over making that chainmail. :)

Making that would be too tedious for me.

Excellent work! Ever consider making full plate?

full plate like in proper smithing work, with a forge and such? If I had a forge, maybe :)

I've been tempted by scalemail for a while now, maybe when I feel up to starting a big project I'll give it a go.
