TheLilMommaB created the topic: Saltwater tanks

Anyone here ever have or currently have a saltwater system? One of my other hobby tanks is a hermit crab tank that I'm trying to make as natural as possible.

Right now they only have disposable paint trays as salt and fresh water pools but I'd like to eventually change them to cycled mini aquariums, prolly like 2-5 gallons each. I think for the fresh I'm gonna have some live plants and a few shrimp and/or snails but I have no idea what so ever about how to handle a saltwater setup. My Google searches have been major confusing and now I'm wondering if I can even pull this off.

Stay at home mommy to 4 kids (Ana 11, Joseph 10, Alizabeth 6, and Christian 2) 11 purple pincher hermit crabs, 8 cats, 6 guppies, 2 little molly fish, 3 ferrets, 2 parrakets, 2 Oscars, 1 red eared slider, 1 cockatiel, 1 goldfish, 1 veiled chameleon, and 1 bone headed pittbull. And working with The Mid Atlantic Turtle and Tortoise Association to become a slider foster.

Thanks hopefully he could point me to a good startup website or something :-)

It's about 9 inches deep, 150 lbs of sand plus about 2 lbs of coconut fiber dirt. Some of the hermits in there are pretty big and need tons of room to dig around so they don't run into each other underground molting and decide to act like cannibals

This is one of the biggest guys...there's 10 more smaller ones some really small some just a little smaller then this one.

Hermits set up properly are awesome fun to watch...I love it when they climb the lid upside down and every now and then they just let go and fall to the bottom...the other day I found my biggest crab holding my smallest turning him round and round like a giant bully...if you get some I'd suggest not listening to anything the pet store says and check out some hermit crab forums cuz I think the pet stores know less about hermits than they do about Oscars...they sent us home with one crab and said he could like in one of those little plastic critter cage things...I did not know what I was getting myself into lol.

Do you think I could pull off a really small tank with just a couple of shrimp or snails? Maybe some kind of plant? I'll take any tips you have to offer or maybe some websites you could point me to that have proper information. I thought about going to a pet store to ask but figured they'd prolly give me the wrong info of sell me things I didn't need.
