salt water. pretty close to a red fish. they get a little bigger, and are a tougher bonier fish. but they all live in the same areas and eat pretty much the same thing. pretty abundant down here.

big ones are a little rarer. you usually have to go out into the lake or gulf to catch them that big.
both of these were caught inland though.

last night, me and my brother-in-law caught 4 of them over 25 pounds.
threw them all back though.

once they get over about 20-23 inches, they become almost impossible to clean (even the small ones are bony as hell), and are full of worms.

we have a LOT of gar around here.
can be hard to catch with a rod and reel though.

don't know if it's because they're smart enough not to bite, or why.
but there is a wildlife reserve about 300yds from my house.
we see them swirling and breaking the surface all the time. usually several in the same spot, but they rarely bite on a line.

i finally had the opportunity to go again. between work, my son playing baseball and then football, and the oil spill shutting things down, it was a slow year of fishing for me.

here's a good sized sheepshead my son caught a few days ago

some speckled trout we caught this past weekend, and some smaller black drum from the same trip.

the smaller drum are much prettier fish.
they get ugly as sin when they get bigger and start losing their color.
