AM1119 created the topic: Oscar has multiple ailments

My oscar is 6 yrs old and has never had any issues. He now has had popeye for over 2 months and now his eye is full of blood. He eventually started to look somewhat "bent" and one side of his belly is poked out. I raised the heat to 84 and did everyday 25% water changes along with epsom salt for weeks. This did not work. I added melafix and pimafix along with the water changes. This didn't work so I waited a couple weeks and tried kanamycn and followed the directions. This did not work so I waited a couple more weeks and used furan-2 and followed the directions. This didn't work so I waited a couple weeks and am now trying jungle clear. In the middle of all this he has now begun to stay partially sideways and just recently is rolling over trying to swim and has fin rot. What's strange is that sometimes he will swim as normal for a while and then stay sideways again for hours. Last week he has quit eating his Hikari Cichlid pellets. He refuses to eat anything alive. Over the years this seems to be the only thing he will eat. I have no idea whatsoever as what to do now. I am unaware how to post pictures. I just joined today.

He is in a 55 gallon with no tank mates and nothing sharp. He has 2, 75 gallon capable HOB filters and an air stone. I am not one to know technical terms of some things, but I can find out once I get home from work. Please help me. I love him very much and it is heartbreaking. I have cried one too many times watching him like this.

Welcome to OFL, sorry its not a good beginning. First thing to realize is that any med will have no effect in water that is not very clean. By clean I mean no ammonia no nitrite and a regular nitrate level of well under 20ppm. Popeye is caused by exposure to poor water over an extended period. At 6yrs I will assume your fish is somewhere in the 10-12in range of size? In 55g you would have needed to be doing a MINIMUM 75% water change at least twice a week.. at least.. as a regular maintenance ritual. Your filters may be overwhelmed, regardless of ratings. Do you, or have you ever tested water parameters? Everything you describe leans toward long term exposure to poor water quality, and sadly enough, your fish may be at the end of its rope because of this. First thing I suggest is large volume water changes, 80-90%, every 2 days. Lay off the meds and see if true clean water may help a bit

Thank you so much for your help! I will begin the large water changes first thing in the morning. Should I continue the epsom salt and prime when changing the water? As for testing water parameters, which kit do you suggest? Maybe the paper test isn't accurate.

Always use Prime for water changes. You can ease off the salt. API liquid test kit is most trusted. Strips are not accurate. For the nitrate portion of the liquid kit, be sure to shake very well the bottle 2. Veeeeery well.
