I have a tiger Oscar, full grown, probably 8-9 years old. He is in a 55 gallon tank with one black lace catfish. Two days ago, I changed out 1/3 of the water, and put in the Easy Balance. At first he was fine, eating, etc., now he is laying on the bottom of the tank all the time. I noticed this last nite. I tested the water, nitrates were up (140+), everything else was fine. This morning I changed out 1/3 of the water again, and I also put some Melafix in the new water, as his scales are coming off, and his fins are ragged, which I'm assuming is becuz of the nitrates. I am going to change out some of my filter media, which is a huge job (FX5) and see if that helps. I haven't done that for quite awhile. Could it be that he is just getting too old? Any other suggestions from anyone? Thank you.

140 nitrate is pure poison, and that reading comes after a 1/3 water change??? Very bad. I would be curious to know what has been your regular water change schedule up to this point. Clean the sponges in the FX, but careful not to lose too much bio media(ceramic rings) as these things hold your beneficial bacteria.

I do a regular water change of 1/3 the tank about every 3 weeks.

Well, here is the problem. You should have been doing a 75% water change every 3 days with an adult Oscar and a catfish in a 55 g tank. Tank is overstocked btw, but that's rather moot by now. Your fish is succumbing to long term exposure to toxins, namely nitrate through the roof. Its very surprising it has lived this long to be truthful. As a last stab at it surviving, you need to clean up the water to the nth degree. 50% water changes every 2 days. Nitrate should never exceed 20ppm for any length of time. 20ppm is the level at which large volume water change is in order. As stated previous, your nitrate level is poison.
