Hi my oscar fish as of yesterday afternoon has had his mouth open and one of his gills is flared out there is also what looks like a spikey bit pointing out in between his mouth and gills, he is not eating and is barely swimming around hanging on the bottom of tank, Does any one know what could have caused this or what may be wrong, not sure what to do thanks.

what was your last activity with the fish?
distended jaw and gills is normally caused by big chunks of food.
if it does, staying at the bottom is normal until food is digested.

Hi and welcome to OFL. I lean towards a possible injury. Perhaps the fish has rammed into something and dislocated or broken its jaw. When you say missing fish, I assume there are tankmates? Something Oscar may chase or hunt? Is the tank big enough to provide good swim space? If he is injured, options are very limited. He may get by as is. You could possibly try to get his jaw back in place, manually. Fyi, and quite secondary at this point, but Oscar needs far more nutrition than any flake food offers.

Hi thankyou for your reply,
There is only 2 other fish and they are bottom sucker fish doesnt seem to bother with them they have all shared the same tank since day 1. How would i go about putting his jaw back in place ?
Also yes i will be getting him some other sort of food now that he is bigger as long as he gets through what has happened.
