So If I throw an orchid into the back of my filter... I just wash the roots off, stick it in, support it, and go? Or will that be too much water? I'm wanting to try this ... maybe I can actually get my orchids to bloom this way lol.

I have read you can add orchids to it.

In my 265, I've done two water changes in three months. Each one was 50%, and each time I did one, the nitrates were at 40-50ppm.

Fish are happy as can be.

4xOscars
1xBlood Parrot
2xJDs (pair)
5xClown Loaches
1xPleco

265 Gallons (84x24x30)
36" T5 Light for shading, sunlight effects
300 Gallon rated Living Color wet-dry sump
3L of SeaChem Matrix + Bioballss, ceramic rings etc...
1xIvy for nitrate filtering

I am always looking for better ways to...

good readings jcannonb! you seem to have better results than me. How long are the plants?

I have no idea why the water bill is so high

hey jcannonb, i do not want to confuse the people in the community, thus i did not
post inputs here...but want to share it anyway... remember, my 6 liter size canister
full of biological filter... and i stuff it with that devil's ivy... the canister is
full of roots and the plants had grown up to the extent that i made cut out from them
my water remains perfect without w/c for several months....here is the pics...

just adding water to replace evaporating water is a good way to let your water hardness to get out of control ... sorry had to say that

i seen this in the past but they just put it in the tank, stem rot seemed to be a problem. i never thought to use a hob filter. i guess the simple thing are esay to over look sometimes. i will be trying this myself aswell.

we have high nitrates from the tap around these parts and i was looking for away to help lower them. i was gonna cover my bare bottom tank with moss balls, prob still will, but this is a easy and cheap fix. it also look good and fun.

moss balls are pricey but i know a guy .. i should beable to get about a gallon bag full of small ones for $50.

i needed a small filter away so i got one and put the plant in it
its a cheap 10 one from wall mart but the propeller is all incased and injects the water at the bottom of the filter .. if this plant thing works this filter should work fine

i know plants eat nitrates but im abit shy about it will eat all that a osacr produces .. but every little bit helps.. if it works good ill get another small filter like this one

i got this $10 thing here
www.walmart.com/ip/Regent-For-5-15-Gallons-Aquarium-Power-Filter-1-ct/10313136

will post pic.s after a few months if stem rot doesnt sink me.
