Oscars won't actually play to entertain themselves, it's more a case of the Oscar being rather noisy and seeing what is different. If you were to put a ping-pong ball in the tank when the Oscar may investigate it. I have seen videos of Oscars expelling ping-pong balls out of their tank, quite amusing, but it would mean leaving the lid off the tank which I don't think is a good idea. I think most of us have tried putting things in our tank at some stage, I think the majority of people will tell you that the Oscars just completely ignore so-called toys.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

I`ve never tried it but i think once they figure out its not food they would lose interest :(
Wouldn`t hurt to try though and make a vid before they give up!

There are heaps of you tube vids of Oscars (and goldfish) playing ball with their owners, although I dont think this is very ordinary!

My O's play with whatever is in the tank, my tank can never stay pretty for long. For example when the kids find nice rocks in their travels they clean em up and drop em in the tank and next day they are at the other end of the tank..no matter how big they are. Every fake plant has been through the wringer and they have even managed to knock over big lava rocks. I got nice lighting set up and spent ages getting all the lights angled properly and of course they just grab the cords and lights and toss them all over the tank. That is why I always look at minimalist bare tanks and think that although they are very aesthically pleasing for humans, the O's must hate them!

I reckon they would go a ping pong ball for awhile, they are a bit like sharks hunting seals..I might even give that a go...just make sure you have a tight fitting lid!

I agree, they will lose interest eventually. I don't think they have the intelligence to actually identify it as "toys". only a short term curiosity will make them prod it at first but they ignore it after sometime believe me, i have placed so may "toys" in my tank thinking that my oscars would actually enjoy this but then i just got tired of buying eventually as i noticed they just crowd my tank and actually cause more dirt to it.

My boy gets toys. I switch out "toys" often. More often than not, they are more for decoration purposes, but he plays with them. I've had a fake plastic severed hand in his tank since October, and he will poke and prod it around the tank still. I need to switch it out with something more Christmas themed, LOL!

I have had a few things in my oscar tank. He had a golf ball but it was noisy when he hit it then I cleaned up a medicine bottle and put it in so it floated he played with that a lot. Drug it around and spit it at the tank lol :P
