Tony123639 created the topic: Building a 1000 gal tank?

So I have been wanting to build a 1000 U.S. gal (4ft x 4ft x 8ft) tank forever but knowing that 1000 gallons of water weighs about as much as a small car, I was reluctant to do anything until I had done all the math and completely understood all the forces at work.

Recently I got a hold of a computer program that allows me to model just about anything and subject it to all kinds or forces ( a perk of being an engineering student  ) and I thought it was pretty neat and worth sharing. Below is a sheet of a 4ft x 8ft sheet of 5/8in plywood with four 2x4ft boards bracing the back. The front of the plywood is experiencing 7056 pascal of pressure (as if it were a wall of the tank filled with water).

The deformation is exaggerated to show exactly where the board will experience the highest stress. In reality if you look at the scale to the right, all stresses are far below the yield stress of 40 million N/m^2.

So in a nut shell the wall, although it looks like a failure, would hold the water and then some. Can't wait for the day that I can actually build my tank and know that it won't fail miserably!

I could put, like, ... 18? ... Oscars in a tank that size! Lol! ...... Now to get a filter and heater big enough and a way to feed them all.

Imagineers are silly people :P It's ok though i'm a software engineer by trade, so i'm not much better

Very cool you were able to model the stress exerted. Now i'm curious what kind of stress is on my tanks walls.

That's pretty much a dream tank lol. Neat fish too. It did look a bit overstocked though?

4000 Gallon tank or indoor swimming pool? I can`t make up my mind which one it is!

The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.

Water weighs roughly 8.34 lbs/gal.
Your tank would weigh much more than a small car.

Sorry to nitpick on a small detail. I just acquired a 200 gal which I imagine would weigh about the same as a small car - yours would be huuuge.
