Thanks for the write up Ken. I am watching this as I need to do a similar setup pretty soon as I attempt to breed some sensitive and difficult to breed species. please let me know of any problems you run into. your design looks good , i need to scale up a bit for the volume i need to control ph on. Thanks again, nice job. :)

Thanks Tom, i wish i could scale this up to about 100 gallons but just don't have the space in this room. I'll definitely keep you in the loop about it so far it seems to be working very well I'm curious to see what it does to tds

Here's the test results after 24 hours of aeration

Peat water aerating 24 hours
pH- <6
GH- 3°
KH- 1°

50/50 mix aerating 24 hours
pH- 6.8
GH- 5°
KH- 2°

I'm happy with the results, as i expected the pH in the 50/50 mix went up slightly due to the higher GH. Might need to experiment with a 1.5:1 or 2:1 peat to aged tap if it continues to rise but I'm very pleased with these early results, now to find a pH test that goes lower than 6 :S

Here's the test results on 72 hours of aeration, i choose to not test GH & KH since they only seemed to fluctuate during peat filtration and when mixing in aged tap. The straight peat water seems very stable and hasn't fluctuated in pH at all, I'm going to have to do more testing with the mix though a almost full point rise is unacceptable to me

Peat water aerating 72 hours
pH- <6
GH- nt
KH- nt

50/50 mix aerating 72 hours
pH- 7.4
GH- nt
KH- nt

*NOTE*
I don't think i clarified this but during the last 72 hours the recirculation pump was shut off and an air stone was added to provide aeration to mimic normal tank conditions, this was done to test the stability of the peat modified water

crazy stuff would never have thought about this stuff 30 years ago. let alone a wet dry filter or sump system.

How much darkening of the water do you get? A friend wants me to take some of his altum angels but my well water is similar to lake Tanganyika....hard as a brick and 8.6 PH. He has trouble breeding them and wants me to try. I like the challenge.

So that's your secret for Jags breeding? PH and mineral content that high?

Actually this technique is atleast 30 if not 40 years old I'm just bringing the newer technology to it, this is how discus breeders started back in the days before R/O. Now a days reverse osmosis water filtration is the way to go if you need to soften your water but i like the more natural way and you don't have
all the wasted water.

It gets pretty dark but still extremely clear.....Altums :woohoo: you have to keep me in the loop on this one they are honestly my reason for starting down this blackwater dwarf cichlid path (there alot cheaper to kill :S ).

My gut is saying this water straight from the peat barrel after 24 hours of recirculation would be good enough to keep Altums in and they would be happy but to breed in you might need to cut this 1:1 with R/O to bring the tds to where it needs to be, until i get my tds meter i won't know for sure but I'm hoping the peat can bring me down to 125-200ppm
