Hey Ofl. I was googling the best bio media for a hob filter and found a mini "wet dry " setup for emperor 400s on cichlid forum. I thought it was pretty cool so I went ahead and did it an this is what I came up with. They say to use matrix rock or some sort of gravel for the media , but all I had was ceramic rings. If you're going to do this I feel like the matrix rock would be way better because it would pack in the media cartridges better.

this is interesting. the case comes with the filter usually would be loaded with carbon..... i havent used that pretty much since ive got the filter. i just doubled up on the other cartridge.

ceramic rings absolutely work as filter media but im unsure if adding the pump to it actually does anything.

im very intrigued on this one. would it be better to do this then to double up on the blue fiber type cartridge?

thanks for posting this. im very interested in doing this as i have one of these and extra pumps and air hose. id just have to hunt those cases down.... i havent seen one of those laying around in quite some time.

Thanks metal head. I really think the added oxygen from the air stone would really help the bacteria thrive. Check out the original page , it's on cichlid forum. You'll see what I mean as far as using gravel versus ceramic rings for surface area.

Once I get the cases and rings fully cultured , I'd really like to experiment if the cases are actually more effective than the blue filter pads. Maybe pour ammonia in two sep rate tanks without fish and see which filters do better?
