vogey created the topic: Diy canister filter for 125gal

While I am a horder, and as such have 4-5 aquatech 60 filters, I come to understand that is not enough for a 125 gal Oscar tank. Does anyone know of a good write up on a diy canister filter? (I've tried searching. My only access to net is threw a shattered p.o.s boost mobile phone that crashes every 3-5 min and don't get squat for service. So please bear with me, I just want to get this tank set up right)

i am a DIY man and all my filters are DIY... presently, i am using a modified overhead filter for my 220 gal tank
i am using plant bedding to consume the nitrate... so far, it had been running for 5 years without any problem...
it houses many oscars

I really like that concept Draco!! (If I'm getting it right anyway lol) id like to know more about it (no rush though ive spent way more in last week on "fish tank crap" then the boss lady apporoves) to me it looks like you basically made a planter box canopy? Does that require cleaning? Also in the pics it kinda looks like the tank is half full, am I seeing that correctly, and does it need to be like that for this to work correctly? I've got my wife partially on board for me to build a 1000 gal plywood tank (next year or two) it would be in the garage so after we get boiler set up and the extra radiators hooked up in there. I told her the 75 gal not gonna keep her shubunkin and koi forever n with a proper tank (the size of a pond) he could live decades. She loves that idea lol what I didn't tell her is its just practice for my Oscar tank lol

yes... it is a planter's box canopy where i am doing my experiment about aquaponics...
the tank is not always full because i top it off with new water everyday... that is a 220 gal tank and
i keep topping it off 30 gal every day and then removed the water again when it is full....
i have 12 full grown oscars in there 10" to 14" body size... same procedure with my 350 gal tank
containing huge pangasius, gar, pacu, and RTC

Is that the tank in your sig. Then too with all the Oscars? That is very cool. Also is that pic of a cat fish?(I'm sure u mentioned it by name, but I'm pretty dumb when it comes to names of species) Looks huge though! I suppose with that many Oscars daily water changes is a must. Do u run a sump at all? And does the water just pour into one end of the planter, flow threw the planter then out bottom on other end? With this set up do you not need as massive of gph pump as u normally would with an Oscar tank?

hahaha... RTC= red tail catfish

yes... the water is passing from 16 lit DIY bucket with plants too, then passes through the plant boxes and flow back to the tank.
i am just using 2200LPH pump to circulate/move the water, enough for the plants to maximize ammonium nitrate absorption.

please take note, i am in a tropical place and my water condition is different from your place... i just make massive water change
when the pH drop to 4 - 5 level when the corals failed to buffer it...

I been thinkin (not again) what if I took a couple or three smaller tanks that I have (20-30gal) and sealed them shut with plexi on top with possibly a door/lid that screws down to make a vac tight seal, then plumbed the intake/output hoses from my sunsun canister filter into them basically making the "canister" hold another 60-90 gal of water I could put bio balls in them as well, I'd put bleeders on there to purge trapped air?

can you put the idea into an schematic sketch.... perhaps i can help you add some inputs...
i can put my technical background into action LOL!

Sorry its a very very crude drawing I had to whip it up free hand in a few sec while I was at my moms n could use her camera.

The idea is to silicone seal barbs onto the plexi glass sealing the sump/canister tanks so u can just put hoses on with clamps, then if you are gonna put bio balls/other media in make a access cover that would bolt down to seal, and put a bleeder for base board heaters on there to purge trapped air (they cheap, threaded, readily available and stainless with a nice key operation) do you think it would mater were sunsun is placed in line in this? I figured put it last

thanks for the schematic sketches... my only concern is "how would you stop the flow of water" when there is power failure?
2nd... how will you balance the inflow and outflow to avoid flooding either the main tank or the sump?

those are my only worries..
