I have .25 ammonia in my tap water so I purchased Prime to help with that. I have continued to test my water now for close to a month and regardless of what I do I can not get my water test to drop below .25 ammonia. I'm six weeks into a cycle, I've had an ammonia spike (higher than .25) and have had a Nitrite spike. I have a Fluval FX6 and a Fluval 306 packed to the gills with Biomax. So I don't understand why I can't drop my ammonia level to zero. Unless Prime just makes it safe but it will continue to show the lvl but just be nontoxic to the fish. Help me with what ever you got, thanks in advance.

.25 ammonia is still necessary for your developing bacteria to feed on. You have a lot of bio media, particularly with a full FX6. Are you showing any nitrate? 6 weeks is still a bit short to fully complete the cycle. Pretty fine line between the yellow of 0 and the tinge of green with .25 Everyone sees colors and shades slightly different. Even using Prime and testing right after a change, you still see a bit of ammonia, as it is still present, but in the form of ammonium. Your fully developed bacteria colony should drop it to 0, or darn close. Patience, you are almost there, nothing to worry about.

Nitrate was the other battle I've been trying to conquer. It was something else that I could not get under control. I bought Purigen to help bring that down to an acceptable level. I have posted a question about that before and I was told that I needed more media for the BB and so I purchased my FX6. I did not add any of the media from my Fluval 406 that it replaced, but I didn't think it would have a major impact since I was keeping my 306 on the tank, that has been with it since it started cycling. I tested my readings this morning and this is what I got.

Ammonia - .25ppm
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 10ppm

The other thing that I am researching is as to weather hard water 8+PH and temperature would effect the levels.

BTW the Nitrate lvls I was fighting were around 60, and I would get that regardless of WC and my water test for Nitrate was 0
