No, it's just to keep nitrate as low as possible. I think of it as if I didn't even have the plants. If I can keep nitrate at 10ppm or even 5ppm, great! I did like the look of the plants on top of the tank once I added them. I hadn't even heard of a riparium until I stumbled onto it doing some research recently. If anyone wants to see some nice looking tanks, google riparium images.

Bri - another member was having trouble finding pothos. I bought some in the grocery store recently. About a week later, I was in a different grocery store and someone had some pothos in their shopping cart. I asked them where they got the pothos. They didn't know what I was talking about. I pointed to the plant and asked again, and she said, 'Oh, the philodendrun?' A lot of people call it philodendrun because a there's a type of phil that looks almost identical to jade pothos. I know that people use either in an HOB application, but pothos is better. Maybe, try looking for philodendrun. I can show how to tell them apart with a picture.

Very true Poseidon. My tap water is luckily very good to start with so I'm very lucky in that regard. My filtration and wcs keep my readings very healthy. I've seen some stories of tap water making it almost impossible to keep a healthy tank tho.

Thanks Ben so it is more of a stabilising effect. Some tanks can use it and some probably not necessary.

Thanks Mike I will look into that for sure. Anything to help keep nitrates at a minimum is a no brainer for sure. I swear my fish have no idea how much thought and effort they actually get lol. They r barely behind my daughter in what gets my time effort and attention.

I had some computer trouble but I finally found the picture. This is the only easy way to tell pothos from philodendrun. In some places, there will be a couple inches or so above the node where it looks like someone has sliced down the length of the stem with a knife. There are two brown marks along the outside stem. Philodendrum doesn't have this. The stems are round everywhere.

It helps and never hurts, but yes, not necessary in some cases.

Pothos can also be found at lowes or home depot

Nowhere near me has pothos, I have looked. We do not have lowes or home depot or anything similar here. Before moving here I worked in several offices with pothos, I wish I knew better back then and took some cuttings.

Would philodendrum work like pothos? I was looking for pothos the other weekend, after explaining what I am after I eventually found one weak looking philodendrum plant for sale. I did not buy it as I figured it does not work as well as pothos because it is never mentioned when people are talking about good plants to lower aquarium nitrates.
