Hi, my 75g goldfish tank started stinking a few hours after a 20% water change today. I replaced the carbon in my waterfall 55g filter and my fluval U4 is still clean and fresh from last maintenence I did on it. The water is crystal clear and the paramiters are fine. It smells very faintly like a pond when I walk in the room. Possibly because I don't have a fan in the room? It also gets very humid. My 125g Oscar tank has never had a smell issue but 4 Goldfish in a 75g can really make it stink! Thoughts? -BTW I don't keep the goldfish tank filled to the top. Never have, I don't know why.

Goldfish are messy critters, on par with Oscars. Your substrate looks thick, could be holding a lot of waste.

When a tank starts smelling really rank it normally points to an issue with the filter, basically it's a decaying bacteria that are causing the smell. However, since you say that your water parameters are fine then obviously that isn't what is causing the smell. I wonder if the carbon may have something to do with it? If the carbon got saturated with chemicals that may be that was causing the smell. Since you've changed it, see if the disappears over the next few hours. However, I'm afraid I don't really have any answers for you. You sure nothing has died and is rotting somewhere in the tank

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Nothing has died I think I'll just put a piece of Poly Filter somewhere in there and let it soak up whatever and I'll yank it out in about a week. Yes the gravel is thick but I stir it up with the gravel vac as I'm doing the water change and usually get most of the waste out. I also doubled the amount of carbon in my waterfall filter so hopefully the smell will clear up in a few days
