Wols created the topic: My fishless cycle

I have tested the water again tonight and my readings over the last few nights are as follows.

06/05/16- Ammonia 1.0 ppm. Nitrite 1.0 ppm.

07/05/16- Ammonia 1.0 ppm. Nitrite 5.0 ppm. Nitrate 5.0 ppm.

08/05/16- Ammonia 0.25 ppm. Nitrite- Above 5.0 ppm. Nitrate 5.0 ppm.

Is the Nitrite level something to worry about or should i just leave it a while and see what happens? At this rate i should have 0.0 ppm ammonia by tomorrow or the day after. Ill be leaving it for a couple days before re dosing ammonia to get it back up to 2.0 ppm.

Yes, definitely wait until the ammonia and nitrite are zero before you start adding fish. Whereas nitrite isn't quite as toxic as ammonia, it's still dangerous and therefore it shouldn't be present. Looks like your getting there, just be patient, sometimes these things take a little bit longer than you expect.

Thank you OFL. I definitely won't be putting the fish in just yet. I will still be dosing ammonia a couple more times at least. I want to make sure that the readings for ammonia and nitrite will be 0.0 ppm 24 hours after dosing. My question is in regards to the high reading for nitrite. It is literally off the chart. Is it best to wait for it to come down naturally or do a partial water change so that i can get a reading?

The high nitrite is an odd reading. I would continue as you have been, retest. Also know that a nitrite reading will skew a nitrate reading. If nitrite is truly in the 5 range, thats a lethal level. More patience, more time.

I re-tested again last night and got the following.

Ammonia- 0.0 ppm

Nitrite- Still above 5.0 ppm

Nitrate- 10.0 ppm

PH 8.0

It seems like its working as the Nitrate level is going up. I found a fishless cycling article (under the "setting up an oscar aquarium section" of this forum. Don't know how i missed it :) ) and it says that off the chart readings are normal. When both nitrites and nitrates are very high, it advised to do a partial water change to bring them back down. I have dosed some more ammonia (up to 1.0 ppm) to keep everything going. I will check it again tonight and see how it goes. If need be i will do a partial water change and re-test.

Update

After dosing the ammonia i tested tonight and got the following

Ammonia 0.0 ppm.
Nitrite 5.0 ppm (got an actual reading this time)
Nitrate 20.0 ppm.
PH 8.0.

Ill test again tomorrow and see how it goes. Ill also redose some ammonia and do a partial water change on Sunday if need be. Fingers crossed. Getting closer :) :)

Very excited!! Readings tonight for both ammonia and nitrite was 0.0 ppm. Tested nitrites twice, to make sure I wasn't imagining it. Nitrates look to be a little darker than the 20.0 ppm so not too sure on the exact number. I have redosed ammonia up to 2.0 ppm. I'll test again tomorrow night so fingers crossed. Here's hoping for fish by the weekend.

Yes, you seem to be ready. Just a reminder that before fish in, reduce nitrate to under 10 if you can.

I am officially cycled. Readings tonight (after 24 hours) are

Ammonia 0.0 ppm
Nitrite 0.0 ppm
Nitrates 40.0 ppm

I'll be dosing some ammonia tomorrow night. Probably half the normal dose to get it to 1.0 ppm. I'll dose the same again on Friday night and do a 90% or more water change on Saturday afternoon. I'll be doIng some fish shopping on that day. Weekend can't come soon enough :) :)
