Brooksie created the topic: Red measured... outside of the tank!

So today we did something that I will never do again! EVER !!! Let's just say it didn't go well, at all and luckily nothing but my pride was hurt! :(

We took Red (and Daggermouth the FH) out of his tank for the first time in the 3 years that we have had him so that I could get an actual measurement on him. When we went to put him back into the tank, the move didn't go very well at all! He ended up on the floor.. flopping around through the dinning room into the kitchen before we could get him. :( Luckily as I said he wasn't seriously injured - lost a few scales. He's pissed off at us right now. My hubby ended up with actual cuts on his arms from his fins.

But he will recover and by tomorrow he will forget all about what happen. On the other hand, we will remember and won't do that again! It's too scary for me!! I'm sure we could have done it better - I thought we had it planned perfectly!

Anyway... here's my big boy! 13" long at 3 years old... my beautiful Red!

He looks slippery indeed, but very good to know a definate measure.
I'm proud of your gits, to tke him out.
My fear of my guys being mad at me keeps me from taking them out of the tank! :pinch:

13 inches is a big big fish!

That's awesome, I've always thought he looked large, but wow :)

Sorry that finding out came with such an adventure. I hope you're feeling better, at least, Brooksie

That's a big boy!

If you ever decide to measure him again or any other large fish, try a pillow case.

It wasn't my fear of he being mad at me.. it was me killing him!! Already he's better - he ate a few pellets and has stopped huffing around the tank. :) Small baby steps! I'm happy to know how long he is, measuring a moving fish through glass never gives you an accurate length. Now I know for sure. :)

Same here! I always thought he was like 11" or maybe 12" but 13" !! We were shocked to say the least. He has some girth to him as well but I wasn't about to measure that. We hadn't had the adventure yet either but I didn't plan ahead and have a tape measure for measuring girth. He was a handful for my hubby!

As for me, last 2 days have been good days for the back - I had a steroid injection on Wednesday. It won't last but I'm enjoying it while I can. The findings on my last 2 MRI's were not good. Not sure if I told you. One herniated disc at L4 and a new finding - a bulging disc at the thoracic level of my spine which is causing my spinal cord to look like the letter D instead of the letter O which it should look like. It's only a matter of time before I'm on the operating table. 10/30/12 I go back to the Doctor to find out when that "fun" takes place!

LOL He is always a hungry boy !! You could be right! Yes he's fine - almost back to normal, he's already had something to eat. Thanks for checking out my pic.

magnificent beast, i'm really not looking forward to moving to another house, my O's have been in that tank undisturbed for over years now and they hate the net (they allready shredded one when i was trying to catch a severum) so i guess the only option i have is getting them directly into plastic bags or buckets...

160 gallon south american
190 gallon malawi

pillow case. And lower water to half. And good luck! We're moving soon too, and Wicket is now over 20 cms - not a big oscar yet, but not a small fish by any measure.
