Depends what you want them to do. I gather up dry oak leaves, and then I soak them in a light bleach solution until they sink. Then I put them in fresh water, dechlorinate with a double dose of prime, and into the tank about 15 minutes later.

Boiling them also works, gets them sinking faster, but also has them disintegrating faster.

If you want to use leaves as an infusoria culture for fry, though, you should most definitely not bleach or boil them, but then you should also collect them from a place you know is free from poisons and pollutants.

Me being in the city as I am, I don't want to take any risks.
