I'm at my wits end, my sound stopped working on my computer last night randomly, I had my headphones in and I was playing a game then out of nowhere it all muted and I was like I probably just need to restart tomorrow and didn't worry about it.

Restarted, everything is updated, computer tells me device is working properly, and when I do a test it shows there is sound, but I can't hear it.
I have a Samsung monitor with built in speakers, they are working, I can hear out of them, but my problem is I don't use them, I have my own speakers I plug in and a headset. I have tried disabling the speakers on the monitor and no luck.

Here are my sound devices:

As you can see everything is working properly, but I can't hear sound through my headset or my speakers.

I had something similar happened to me recently. Everything seemed in place, until I went to the bottom right of my toolbar, near where the date is displayed. If you find your sound there, make sure that it's not been switched down to 0.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

It's at 100% :(

Just tried to do a system restore to 4/5/2013, told me it couldn't successfully restore it and said there may be a possible virus protecting something, no idea why my Kaspersky hasn't picked up on that if there is a virus.. It ended up messing up a bunch of my files, luckily, I was able to undo system restore and restore it back to today, but my sound still isn't working

Also, I don't know if maybe this had anything to do with it..
But yesterday I was drinking a little too much and dropped my phone in the toilet (oops!) I immediately dried it off and stuck it in a bag of rice for a few hours, no one ever told me I had to turn the phone off so I never did, I plugged it into my computer because my phone was low on battery, I had it plugged in for maybe 10 minutes until my brother told me I have to turn off my phone and keep it in rice for 24 hours.

Could plugging in my phone into my computer have something to do with it? My sound stopped working afterwards, but my sound still technically works since I can hear it through my monitor, just not through anything else.

These kinds of problems can be very annoying.

Quick solution: Does your monitor have a line out jack? If so, try plugging your headphones into that.

What kind of computer do you have and what jack did you have your headphones plugged into when they stopped working?

Unfortunately no, the monitor has no line out jack.

It's an HP Envy H8 1534 PC series

I've tried uninstalling all of my USB hubs, tried uninstalling the IDT High Definition audio CODEC, tried to update, and yet only the sound is still coming from the monitor, no speakers or headphones.. my mic isn't working either, I can't hear skype and people can't hear me

This computer comes with Beats Audio in the front, I'm using a Logitech headset, the ports were in the front and I had them plugged into there when it stopped working.. I've tried front and back ports

I'm almost convinced I'm going to have to take this up to the geek squad and pay them 100 bucks for probably a problem that is so so simple

I can normally fix any computer problem, but I've been working at this all day and I can't figure it out, my only thinking is I either have some sort of virus (Kaspersky running full scan now, still nothing detected) I also ran spybot search and destroy.. Or plugging my phone into my computer had something to do with it, it could have still be wet when I plugged it in.

Or it might be an actual hardware failure, rather than a software problem.

You may wind up having to buy a $20 PCI soundcard.

Impossible for me to say.

You don't think it's odd that the sound is working through the monitor but not my speakers/headset? I thought maybe my PCI soundcard was shot but it doesn't make sense if I can hear it through my monitor.... I dunno though, I have never had this problem! Grahhh

Have you tried plugging the ear phones plug in and out a few times. I had a similar problem on my old Alienware laptop and the little switch was stuck so it always though a set of headphones were in

It's probably using a sound chip that is built into the motherboard, rather than a separate PCI sound card. Is your monitor getting the sound signal through an HDMI cable? It's possible something could be wrong with the line out jack that you are plugging your headphones/speakers into, like Ben said.

Or, and I just though of this, could the problem be with your headphones? Could be a simple broken wire. Try plugging in a different set of headphones or earbuds and see if you get sound.

Edit: Sorry, I'm not familiar with Beats Audio.
