Nina_W created the topic: Minors on OFL

Every so often, we have minors on the site. Most of us cannot know who is a minor or not, but this does not prevent us from getting into heated discussions, which may even have legal ramifications.
Aside from that, assisting a younger person asks for different considerations regarding the resources they have at their disposal, and also perhaps how blunt we are in getting our point across.

To this end, we need to talk about various options for handling this.
There are a few (that I could think of):

- enforce a disclosure of everyone's age
This is not ideal. Not just because some persons are sensitive about their age, but because it is unconstitutional in a great many places to enforce this. Also, it is a simple matter to lie. We could all be world war 2 veterans or 12 if we felt like it.

- make the site 18 and over only
I do not believe this is truly the answer either. Surely everyone, even that 12 year old over there, needs to be able to find help.

- have minors display an M on their profile pic
This is Jack's (fishguy66) suggestion. I like this more than most, but I am also acutely aware that this might make some people's questions seem less serious than others, but we're a good bunch, so maybe I'm over exaggerating that concern. Again, it requires honesty on the part of the youngster, and at least a partial public disclosure of your age.

What do you guys think?

I agree ... I think that not on the picture but maybe below the picture ( so they can still show their fish off if they wanted to) put a UA (under age) or Y (young) or yes M (minor) where we put like sayings or what not.....

make it so what when they sign up they put their age in... at least we are trying to take steps to identify them... I mean it would be really nice to know and I want them hear to help them along their journey to becoming a fish keeper you know... But they should be identified for sure

just have it as part of the sign up so it is not invasive just for records you know

I do agree with identifying minors , but again , will they all be honest ? I am not sure that there is any way of actually making sure they tell the truth. Since I have been here nothing out of line has every been said to a minor or an adult.
And with that being said I will shut my mouth and step aside , since we all know why this is even an issue now...

I dont think they would lie as much if they didn't know what it was for just as they sign up add it and if tis a program that can be written then it should retro fit any old members who are still young

True. As long as Birthday is required at sign up and no account can be made without disclosing that information it may work. Plus you can usually always kind of tell by how things are written if its someone younger.

The feature should be added to ask if they are under 18 years of age. If the minors lie about their age, then the OFL website is absolved for them lying.

A great many websites have a simple little box when signing up (I think including this one) that goes something to the effect of " I agree w/ the site rules" etc, it would be a simple matter to include wording certifying they are over 18 years of age. If they lie, they lie, but OFL would be covered legally.

Also, it would be a REAL good idea to know that maybe you are dealing w/ an immature person BEFORE you reply, so you are better prepared to handle their questions, & to a much greater extent, their ANSWERS......so they wouldn't feel the "full power of the Dark Side", as it were ;)

Not that all adults out there are mature, but I personally don't want to get into a heated discussion w/ a 12 yr old, unbeknownst to me, & made to look like a bully afterward. Ideally, no one wants to get "into it", but we all know it does happen.(And, not all people post their age in their profile, so I don't see any drawbacks in having minors identify themselves)

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

I know this feeling.

A legal disclaimer would definitely be the place to start (I think), a simple check box would help a lot if it should go further than the forum. Should we allow for "my parent/guardian gives me permission to use this site", or do you guys generally feel we should move to 18+?

As for an identification marker - I wonder if a few of our minor members might not be willing to chime in and say what they might feel about this?

You are also counting on them actually reading the rules and regulations and actually asking for parental permission. Aside from it maybe taking any legal responsibility from us if the kids are lieing about their age , I dont think this will really change a whole lot. You could try to set up a seperate section for 18 and under....but again...what good does any of this do if the kids lie ? We all remember our friend TigerOscar and whatever other names he was using..I however have no idea what would posses any kid to come to a fish website and do this to begin with...I thought thats what FB was for ???
