OFL created the topic: Oscar Fish Care Sheet

Hey guys, especially Sandra, Jack and Tom, I have noticed that we are getting quite a few search queries looking for "Oscar Fish care sheets". I think we need to create a downloadable care sheet. I have my own ideas about what should be on it, I would appreciate some ideas that could also be included. What do you reckon?

I think its a great idea. Personally I think it should have the basic information on it , like minimum tank size , filtration and such , so that we dont overwhelm people right off the bat. We could add links to articles here , so they can look at more detailed information if they want to. Like a link to Jasons Feeding Guide when giving information on good quality fish food. May be a link to common tank measurements when talking about tank size , since at times we have found that people were off about their tank size. Provide a link to places that sell the test kits at a reasonable price.
I also would try to post pics of the test kit and other products we recommend , since its a lot easier to have a visual in your head when you go to the store to look for a specific product.

If you need any help with this project let me know Penn. :)

I think one of the most important things that needs to be on there is to let people know NOT to change the filter pads every month. It's something they read on the boxes they come in and are being told by employees at pet stores.
People think they are doing the right thing , when in fact having their tank in a constant cycle can be so very harmful for their fish.

Very true. And I must admit that was one of my "well-meant-but-so-wrong" beginners mistakes.
In an attempt to keep my water clean, i was washing out my media almost every day.
Surely I had visually clean water, but looking at the parameters, the water was dirty as can be!

That's good, but I would also state not to rely on filter pads for biological filtration; I would state to use a HOB w/ a built-in biological filter, like the Emperor or Fluval C series......once cycled, you would then no longer have to worry about changing filter pads, & rely on them solely for mechanical filtration only.
