I switched to sand from gravel and don't think id go back. The fish like it better and I find it easier to clean as everything sits on top. Africans like to dig a lot, I'm sure they like the sand better. Make sure not to pile rocks in such a way that the rocks will fall on them if they dig around and under the rocks. They are very busy diggers.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

With Africans I believe you are better off using sand as a substrate.
We actually have quite a few people that prefer sand over gravel , even for other fish.

It may take a little time to get used to when cleaning it , but you will develope your own system that works best for you in no time.
Ususally you just want to hover about half an inch to an inch over the sand and let your gravel vac just suck up the dirt.
Some people also use a power head to have the dirt moved to a certain area in the tank to make cleaning easier.

One thing to be careful with is to make sure not to get too much sand sucked up into your filter instake , especially if running a canister.

But if you do decide to switch , there will be plenty of help here to answer all your questions and give you all the help and advice you need. :)

with africans you will need to get other median that can get the PH higher if you're thinking about getting pool filter sand - you can get african cichlid sand ...but it's costly.... i would def go with sand over gravel for africans.....

I had Aragonite sand in my Af tank, had problems with cloudy water and clogged filters. Now have crushed coral, much better.
