putting a good number of african cichlids in a tank isn't overstocking it's just stockinge in the wild they live in lakes that are packed with fish so for them it's normal that's not to say you can't overstock a african cichlid tank the number is just higher then normal

if you're looking for number that's pretty hard to do i mean obviously a 4 inch yellow lab takes up less room then 10 inch venustus so the best i can do is somewhere between 10 and 20 depending on the species

Anyone who is pro-overstocking..run!

What is their reasoning for overstocking? Is there some benefit they assume they have by overstocking? If they do have some benefit...it can't possibly outweigh the health if the fish!

NIMFT!

I've kept Africans before ... years ago... but never had to over stock them. People do it to curb aggression but it's not necessary. Overstocked tanks just look bad, as well as being bad for the fish.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

NIMFT?? Help me, what's that? So the way I see it I'm going to see what my dubois and venustus do size wise. I can always add more later if I need/want to. This has been good info and opinions though that I really appreciate. I believe everything I have now get 4-6 inches with apparently the exception being my venustus.

Lake Malwai & Lake Tanganyika are HUGE lakes, more akin to inland oceans.......aquariums are artificial enclosed systems, & even the biggest ones are dwarfed in comparison....African cichlids are still cichlids, & produce an enormous bio-load, especialy in light of the fact that the majority of species kept are algae grazers, which defecate constantly, which thereby puts a tremendous strain on the biological/mechanical filters. Those who overstock their tanks for any reason whatsoever are unwise @ best. Overstocking is overstocking, it is NEVER to be recommended, & should be avoided @ all costs.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

I had for a year or so about 20-24 assorted Africans in a 5ft 120g. While fish size and aggression wasnt a major issue, I could not maintain a reasonable nitrate level even with 2-3 large water changes a week. I sold the fish and tank is now occupied by a single Oscar. I think you could have a few more small species in your 55, but the Venustus may be the odd man out from size potential. Malawi Mbuna are a fairly large African and quite aggressive, best to avoid those if you shop for more fish.
