purplecandle created the topic: Jewel Cichlid Questions Color/Feeding

I picked up a jewel cichlid yesterday, I had been waiting for one for awhile.

In the tank he was typical reddish color with blue/green speckles. Once put in the bag he turned into a plain grey fish of course.

So now it's a day later and he is still grey, but his blue speckles are brilliant.

My first question is, is there a reason he has not turned back to red? Was he only red in the store? Do I have a different species? Any ideas?

Next question is, is he a top or bottom eater? I asked the store specifically and they said top. So I bought floating hikari, but he doesn't seem to notice it. He seems to swim around the bottom half of the tank. He did Eat PE Mysis.

Info-
From a good lfs. Single jewel kept in a tank with 20 or so assorted Africans, yet he was boss.

Active healthy fish. Big personality. No signs of illness. Running around the tank.

Tank- 0,0, 5-10. Cycled with fishless cycle 6 months. No other fish.

Pic of the tank. I have a lot of trouble posting pics, so just click the link. It takes you to the pic in my gallery on the puffer forum. Excuse the ugly plants, I haven't yet decided which way to go with it. Getting a pic of the fish is very hard. I'm gonna try when it gets dark.

Fish will likely eat from anywhere. Should have pellets formulated for Africans, less protein than American cichlids. Harder, alkaline water also most ideal, Ph in the 8's.

I had a jeweled cichlid for years in a community tank. I fed him floating cichlid pellets which he ate up hardily. I also found that his color fluctuated from time to time. As long as your water, tank size, etc. are good I am sure it will see it turn its signature red, but keep in mind that it is not constant. It is probably just adapting to new surroundings. Give him a couple of days or so.

I'll have to look for African food. I bought Hikari bio-gold.

My pH is nowhere near 8! I wish it was. On a good day I'm still under 7. It's never been a big deal so I don't mess with it, but when I do snails I put in argonite. Makes thier shells better or something.

So, it sounds like I just have a picky fish that needs more time. I didn't realize they could make that red color disappear for a long period of time.

Thanks guys, I was panicking a little.

There are several species of Jewels out there, but to the best of my knowledge, all are West African riverine species, & prefer softer water & PH values from 6.0 to 7.0. They would be right @ home in the PH you currently have.

All will do well on a prepared diet w/ the addition of fresh/frozen krill, bloodworms.

If you want to know the sex of your fish, look @ it's caudal fin...males will have a "crescent" of spots that go all the way from top to bottom....females only go 1/2 way.

Hemichromis Elongatus is on my "bucket list" of fish to keep. A true "pocket battleship" cichlid....doesn't get big ( I think maybe 5" max) but a fish that is Strong in the Dark Side...

Hmmmm. I find it interesting that the sydneycichlid article says they are considered very aggressive. I had found the H. guttatus, the one I seem to have had, to be relatively peaceful, which is one of the reasons I got it in the first place for my community tank. I loved that fish.

I guess the H. Elongatus is a different story all together!

A much warranted correction on my Ph recommendation. Looking back now, I wonder if my Red Jewels did poorly, ultimately passing, from being kept with mostly Malawis in mid 8 Ph levels? Always something to learn, and OFL is THE place to learn it!

That article was amazing! It also seems I have a boy :)

He still hasn't turned red, its weird. I wish i could get a pic for a proper Id.
He's extremely shy and seems happy just to dig pits everywhere.

Oh well. Hopefully he turns red, but if not its still a cool fish. Very much like a ram.
