This is his "I'm hanging out" colours.
I wish I could get a picture of him when he's bossing around anothr fish... he goes dark, almost black on his belly, and his colours intensify so much.
But then, he's usually also zooming around at the speed of fish chasing fish, so no luck yet. I'll keep trying, though, they live a good ten to fifteen years, so I've got time :)

He also, of course, goes a rather unattractive bluey-grey with yellow when he's not feeling particularly comfortable.

he amazing!! love the photo :) ive never seen one like that in the fish shops over here it would be quite amazing to see him change colour like that

Thank you! It's probably because as young fish, there's nothing special about them. It takes quite a while for them to look any good, and females always stay drab - kinda like peacocks.

That, and finding non-hybrid Victorian fish is a rare thing indeed.

I think it's worth paying the bit extra and making some tank space for these guys. The nile perch, and pollution, has wreaked havoc on their homes, just like with the red tail shark. Keeping diversity going, in my own small way :)
