JBare created the topic: Question on Cichlid breeding

I have a pretty eclectic mix of Africa's in my 55, but I've just noticed one of my Acei's is carrying babies in her mouth. I'm kind of excited, even though they'll most all be eaten. I was thinking of taking her out but all I have available right now is a 10 gallon and I'm afraid to stress her out. My main question is, what are the odds she bred with the other Acei I have? I only have 2 so the chances of having m/f I figured were slim. Would an Acei cross breed with another African? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm not sure how all the breeding works and it definitely wasn't my goal with these.

Depends on what other species you have but most africans will only spawn with there own species the problem is each location has there own unique color morph and you dont want to mix them. Acei have subtle diffrences in location but for the most part there are only two morphs in the hobby and thats the yellow tail w/purple blue body and the black and white, so i would say there is almost a 100% chance it breed with another acei. Moving her to a 10g would be fine just have the tank ready and matching give her some sand and as much cover as you can (when she spits the babies need to hide mom will eat them) and make the move fast if you cant net her after a few tries stop

You could also do a breeder net, that would allow her to stay in the tank with the other fish and when she spits just remove her

Yea, she's a yellow tail purple body, so is the other one and they are the only two acei in the tank. I'll see about catching her tomorrow, my 10 gallon is pretty heavily planted (fake) and it's sand, white sand. I should probably cover the filter with a stocking too. Hmmm, what are the dang chances of buying 2 fish that were make and female, lol crazy! I have a list of my stock somewhere but here's what I can remember off the top of my head...

1 - venustus
1 - Dubois
2 - Purple Acei
3 - White scroll
2 - albino stripped not sure the breed
1 - Super VC 10
4 - random hybrids from Petsmart
