lazerchick created the topic: Is this HITH?

Hi,

I have 2 oscars in a 300L tank one is 30cm long and the other 25cm. The smaller one has started to get these pock like marks on his face and his skin appears to be lumpy. To me he looks a bit wrinkly like he's shriveled up or something. His appetite is still very strong but he breathes a bit heavy and lies down a lot but as soon as it's feeding time he's very alert and excited. The bigger oscar doesn't display any of these symptoms at all and is fine. I've attached a pic so you can see what I'm talking about. He's got a bit of cloudy eyes too. Is this HITH?

Unfortunately that is HITH...

Can you give us all tank and fish details please...
Is it just the 2 Oscars?
What filters are you running?
How often do you do a water change?
How much of a water change do you do?
What is your feeding schedule?
Can you give us readings for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and PH?

After we have these answers we can help more!

yea like Nicki satates it is HITH not the worse case seen on here but it is important to be quick on these things can you post what Nicki has asked for as quick as you can.

You already have some issues like tank size 300litre is really not suitable for 2oscars and if you have tank mates aswell that is looking over crowded.

With HITH it is very important to keep good water so it might be advised to test your tap water aswell.

welcome to site and you come to right place for help :)

I'm living my life, but not necessarily in the right order :)

Damn, I thought so.. Anyway, here's all the info.

- 2 Oscars, 3 small angelfish, 1 bristlenose catfish & 4 small yabbies.
- Otto internal filter with 4 cups at 800 l/h.
- Past 2 weeks have been doing 50% water change every week but before that it was 25% per fortnight.
- Was feeding every night with cichlid pellets but the water got too dirty so cut down to every other day. Once a week they get bloodworms and frozen cichlid mix.
- Readings are: Ammonia - 0.25ppm
Nitrite - 0.25ppm
Nitrate - 80ppm
pH - 7.4

What is the best way to treat HITH?

Thanks for your help :)

I am about to break some bad news Hun...
Your tank equates to 79 US gallons... That tank is big enough for One Oscar alone.. Nothing else...
You need a bigger filter to run in addition to the one you have.
Water readings need to be
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate under 40ppm
So your water is NOT in good condition...
The best way to treat HITH is a 50% water change every 3 days... It will take a LONG time to heal...

You really need to do something quickly so this issue doesn't get worse..
Sorry.. :(

Hello and welcome, although wish it was better circumstances!

It is not uncommon for people to buy Os without fully realising the long term implications of both their size and waste issues, you did not mean for this fish to get sick because of his living conditions...and we understand that.

What is important now is that you know you either have to get a much bigger tank or an additional tank (again a bit bigger than the one you have) and adequate filtration for Oscars - they are pigs!!! :P

Clear and clean water is what he really needs. The cloudy eyes could be a bacterial thing or it could be either ammonia or acid burns brought on by poor water, either way, he needs perfect water asap and a rigid water changing schedule.

You obviously care about him and you have come to the right place - we will all help you and your fella and he can give you years of love for doing so.

Best of luck!

Yeah I'm sorry, without stronger filteration I think you are going to have trouble curing this. I know getting a tank might be an issue but you really do need some new filteration, check out canisters or an aqua clear 110, get two aqua clears or an aqua clear and a canister, you know some variety and your tank will be in better condition for sure. All you can do right now is use some conditioner such as Amquel or Prime, etc. and hope you can protect them temporarily until you get some filteration/do some good water changes. Make sure when you clean out the water with your syphon, that you really stir up the gravel and get that mess underneath, you'd be suprised what can be underneath there even if the water looks pristine.

We aren't joking when we say water changes and Prime are the best solution to a problem.

I thought for filtration you need to clean double what your tank holds per hour? Aquarium guy told me that this 800L/hr is good for this tank size but I put another filter in though, 500L/hr, is that enough now or should I get a bigger one?

I would consider investing in a good canister filter, they're more expensive, but imo, do a much better job. For your hith problem, you can't have too much filtering, especially considering how overstocked you are.

Good luck, sounds like you do care about the fish.
