Remigo created the topic: Jack Dempsey and Oscar

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on this site

I have a Red Oscar and a Jack Dempsey in my 75 Gallon tank. I have had them both for a long time (honestly i don't remember the amount of time, but at least 1-2 years). The reason i'm posting is because my Jack Dempsey NEVER leaves his hiding spot (inside a pot). When i got him a long time ago, he and the Oscar were around the same size and seemed to get along fine, but i have noticed that the Oscar has seriously out-grown the jack Dempsey and now when the Dempsey tries to leave his hiding spot he is chased right back in the pot. :( They are both getting pretty large (a few inches for the Oscar and maybe 2 inches for the jack dempsey). should i get the jack dempsey to a new home? i dont own another tank, so moving him to another tank is not an option. i really dont want to give him away but he NEVER leaves his pot and im afraid this might not be a comfortable living situation for him. If you need pictures let me know.

I am afraid if he is hiding all the time, he is scared and not likely to come out more until separated...

You could try removing his pot and watch them closely to see if the Oscar is causing damage...

Hope this helps and Welcome! :)

We keep a 5in long Jack Dempsey and a 7-8in long oscar in a 55gal tank. They get along okay, but the oscar does bully the dempsey, esp. around feeding time. if worse comes to worse and you do have to seperate them, a 10gal would work fine. we kept two dempseys in w/ this oscar until he took a chunk out of one's tail. it did fine in a 10 gal and it was about 5in long, so since yours is smaller, he should do okay

I am sorry but I have to disagree here... That JD CAN NOT live in a 10 gallon... A 29 MINIMUM!
And possibly larger depending on weather or not it's a male...

If you can't leave them living together, then I would do what was best for the fish and rehome...

i meant as a quick fix until a more permanent solution can be found. we kept ours in a 10gal for about a month until we could get it in a larger tank
