So...this may seem stupid...but do Oscars yawn?? I don't feel that it would be logical to say they do, but that's what it looks like lol.

Oscar do yawn, but I have read that if they do that very often is the sign that your nitrate is high and they try to clean their gills out by yawning.

Yes, but either or Oscars yawn and mine is proof of it and I'm a waterchange-aholic. Oscars yawn and mine seems to do it more in the night but yes they do yawn, but if it's excessive it would be due to high nitrates.

We aren't joking when we say water changes and Prime are the best solution to a problem.

They only yawn if they had a late night on the town.
Imho, it's usually to clear their gills, fron any debris, or leftover foodparticles...

so it's perfectly normal, even if you waterparameters are in check ;)

i believe it is sorta that same as with humans.
we breathe deeply to steady breathing rate in preparation for sleep, much as fish do when getting closer to night.
also daytime yawning for them is the apparant equivalent to a cough, we clear our lungs they clear their gills :)

I can also confirm that this is totally normal with Oscars, and other fish, yawning seems to be perfectly natural part of their behaviour and is absolutely nothing to worry about. However, if they are constantly yawning all the time then you may want to look at your water conditions, I did here once that high nitrates could make fish yawn, but that is not something I would stake my life on, it is just something I read a few years ago

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

yes. very common.

it does bring up an interesting question:

Why do fish do this?

are they just stretching their mouths/jaws ?
