KAYBYRD created the topic: Oscar not moving

I just introduced a pleco to my tank and my oscar started acting funny and is laying at the bottom. Is he just being shy or is there something wrong?

Ok now the Oscar is picking on the Pleco. Is this normal for the first encounter?

I shouldn't worry, when you first introduce Oscars into the tank, they will often be very stressed and just sit there doing nothing, sometimes leaning to one side. However, they normally pick themselves up and are perfectly okay after a while. As for the Oscar picking on the other fish, this is also quite normal, Oscars can be bullies so this is something you will have to keep an eye on, especially if the Oscar is a lot bigger than the other fish.

I have had the oscar for about 2 1/2 months now but the pleco is new. They are same in size. Just worried that the oscar is going to really harm the pleco

Do you know what type of pleco it is? How big is it?

The problem you may have is the Oscar will grow faster than the pleco, in other words in seven or eight months, you could have a 9 inch Oscar and a 3 inch pleco, not really a very good mix.

I believe its a common pleco, its around 3 1/2 inches to 4 inches long. My Oscar is about 3 1/2 inches. For now I am going to give the pleco many hiding spots in the tank.

Common pleco's have the potential to reach 24 inches, however they probably won't grow at the same rates as your Oscar so giving it lots of hiding places is a very good idea. Hopefully by the time the Oscar reaches adulthood, your pleco will be too big for the Oscar to eat, but it is something you will have to keep a very close check on.

So I returned the Pleco for the sake of its life. My Oscar is very happy now, so I guess it works out :woohoo:
