ok, so i just purchased a new 55 gallon tank and want to get into oscars. i have had them with my dad years ago, and love them so much. the tank is about 3 months old with a penguin 350 filter (getting another in a couple days for added filtration) and my oscar just isnt happy at all really =/ all i have is ONE oscar, a pleco (donated him to my LPS yesterday too) and 2 blue dragon goby's ..... i know, i know bad move but they were just too cool. and a few feeder guppies. they all seem to get together pretty well and in fact my oscar seems to school with the guppies but will not eat them.
i got the oscar 2 months ago when he was about 2 and a half inches, now he is only 3 inches with very little appetite and spends most of his time at the bottom motionless or tipping sideways. he used to be more active, following my hand and swimming around the tank. i do water changes every week (25%) and keep the temperature at 78-80. a touch of aquarium salt and all. he refuses to eat his hikari gold pellets and only eats brine shrimp. he used to go crazy over blood worms but now he could care less.
i also think he used to have ich but am not sure, he has what looks like small bubbles around the bottom of his body and fins. and today i have noticed white feece's
GRRRRRRR!!!! haha, am i doing something verry wrong? or is there something wrong with my baby? i am really worried about his growth...
any help would be great.

Tank readings, we needs them, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, the whole works. Can't make an assessment without them :(

You need to either take a water sample to your LFS and get the exact readings from them, or get yourself an API master test kit and take the readings yourself. Ideally you'll want to get a test kit of your own since monitoring water readings is an important part of tank maintenance anyway.

Also your tank is only big enough for your oscar. I made the same mistake getting another fish in with her and the water quality suffered and my oscar has hole in the head now which I am really trying hard to heal.

Don`t be afraid to change 50% of your water every week. You will find lots of people on here change that much an dont have any problems. With your tank being a bit over stocked you could even do an extra change per week as well and it will only benefit your fish :)

ok, i like doing water changes. and i figure another filter will only help with a second pair of bio wheels. but is the oscar only growing half an inch in 2 months a problem for such a young fish?

Hmm i think little ones grow faster than that but if yo can get him/her back onto a more nutritious diet maybe it`ll help. In the meantime do more water changes and get a test kit so you can see whats really going on in your water then go from there.

Edit: the white poo is a worry but wait till someone else tells you what to do about it, i don`t know!

Hi, yes I would hazard a guess to say that is a slow growth rate - when they have enough food, clean water and no stress they will grow an inch a month at that age.

You absolutely need that test kit, you have no idea what is going on with your water without it.

White poos MAY be a sign of a parasite of some description, but hold off hitting the tank with anything until you know what is happening with your water. If the problem is your water anything you add to the tank will only make it worse.

Why are you adding aquarium salt? The salt will accumulate each time and is very bad for your fish...the amazon river is fresh water. Changing the salt content of your water will effect your fish at a cellular level as Osmotic pressure forces fluids out from within the fish. Do some big water changes and try to get the water pure.

And ditto to the other guys - less tank mates and more filtration..

Live feeder shrimp have the potential to introduce problems into your tank as well as make nutritional food less appealing..so I would try to correct that.

Sounds like you love your little guy! With some perseverence he will be OK..

Get back to us and Good Luck!
