i add about 1 tablespoon of water per 5 gallons (directed by box) i heard it reduces stress on the fish and helps with ich. i also read that it will only do more harm than good for an oscars extended life. so i have been doing a few changes without adding it, to gradualy get it out. i love my little "rex" and i just want him better ^.^ so ill be getting everything i need for him tomorrow.
i just took all the rocks out of the tank too, because im getting sand instead of gravel soon, i heard that changes the PH down a bit. so i wanted to do it gradualy.

I`ve never put salt in a fish tank so i think you could just forget about it IMO.
If you want you could get rid of all your substrate it`ll make cleaning so much easier while you`re trying to get your water perfect and your oscar well. After you`re a pro at water changes and your water is tip top you can add the sand :)

a Tablespoon to 5 gallons is way too much salt for "tonic" use. That level of salts would be more appropriate for a Tanganyika tank, in fact it is more than I put in with my fronts, and they want HARD mineral rich water. Your Oscar wants soft water. I would discontinue the salt or at least cut the amount by 2/3 or so. Until you get your fish stabilized I would also hold off on feeders unless you are growing them yourself.

ok, well i took out my gravel and rocks, and did a 50% water change. now he seems to be swimming around a touch more. could just be because he doesnt like the huge change in the tank. but we will see how it goes =) and im going to feed him nothing but hikari gold pellets for a while. for the last 2 weeks he has been getting nothing but brine shrimp =/ lol i spoil him. didnt know it wasnt a "meal" and that it was just a snack.... whoops lol. maybe that is causing the growth issues? im not sure. but either way, we will see how it goes.

The pellets will work much better. You want a healthy fish, not a spoiled unhealthy fish. Great job ;)

wow, thats pretty awesome. i went to my LPS today and got a new filter, test kits, and sand. the guy there told me that the white poo is probubly because of just eating brine shrimp, and it is getting him sick. so i just put everything in, and im waiting for the sand to settle before i put the little guy in. is fine sand going to be a problem with the filter? cause its REALLY fine and im just worried it will polute the water too much and wont settle.

Hahaha Sounds like my Groucho. He was 2.5 inches when I got him and now, a good month or so later, he is at least 5 inches. :woohoo:

OP: Yep, if you start giving him just Hikari Gold and hold off on the shrimp for a bit, he should pick up on growth, I would think. But, don't be surprised if he refuses to eat for several days. He will eventually eat the pellets if you are persistent and don't offer him anything else until he is steadily eating pellets for several days, at least. Good Luck!

We have had our Groucho (Tiger O) for over a year now...have watched him grow from 2 inches to pushing 11 inches! LOVE watching him swim around in his little 55 gal world. We also have a fancy goldfish and a black moor in a separate tank. We love our fishies!...[IMG]

i never had issues using the salt method on my oscars...i think it also spaired my plecos life as well. i was using 1 tablespoon to 9 gallon and it clearrs up just about aanything. then a good water change after a couple days
