It takes a little while for the new sand to settle, but it will! I have sand and it was frustrating at first, but after about 2-3 hours I loved it in my oscar tank. Don't put in any orniments until it's all settled otherwise the sand will settle all over them as well as the bottom of the tank and then you have to stir up the sand again moving them out..... :P

yeah, that would have been nice to know XD i kinda like it on some of the bogwood. gives it a nice look. its very fine sand so it only sprinkles on it. i have about 6 plants (small) of amazon sword.... kinda looks lame on that. but either way, im glad that it is settling. my tank is going to get so much better! thank you all so much for helping. im a first time fish owner (before it was just my dad and me staring) so this has been so much help.

Sand will be all over one thing today and all over something else tomorrow!
Make sure your filter intakes are up higher and try to keep sand away from them as much as you can. Don`t go pouring water in when you do a water change, which will be at least every week!, do it gently so the sand does`t get stirred around too much. I always turn my filters off when i do a water change so they don`t suck any in, but don`t forget to TURN THEM BACK ON!!!
So have you tested the water yet with the new test kit?

yeah, what i do is put a saucer on the sand, then put a cup on top of that. and put the hose of my gravel vac in the glass. so when the water pours out it goes into the glass first making no sand stirr around.
wont raising the intakes too high reduce the amount of stuff they pick up? cause i have 2 penguin 350 power filters on my 55 gallon marineland LED tank.
and i havent checked the water yet. i did about an 80% water change to get rid of the gravel and add the sand. so whatever was in there is out by now ^.^ ill check it for sure in a few days so i have a more correct reading on how my tank is.
or should i just do it in the morning?

It won`t hurt to lift the intakes up a bit till it look like they wont pick up much sand. Each week, or more often when you`re changing the water, just pick up any remaining poo with the vac. You can test your water as often as you like until your tank is properly cycled and you`re in a regular maintenance routine. As soon as you notice your nitrates too high you can do a water change. The more healthy your water is the faster your oscar will recover and start to grow properly :)

Ammonia should ALWAYS be 0
Nitrite should ALWAYS be 0
And
Nitrate should ALWAYS be kept under 40ppm

This is of course in a cycled aquarium...

sweet =) thanks for that. my tank isnt fully cycled probubly. i have had it for about 3 months but i dont think its quite ready yet.
i just got a second penguin 350 filter yesterday too, so that one is JUST starting to get ready. so that will help in like 2 months.
at the moment its just Rex (2.5 inch oscar) and 2 blue dragon goby's (4 and 7 inches) in my 55 gallon tank.
never tested water before, but im going to get out my new master test kit and try it out XD
