hey guys, i seem to be having trouble with these little tiny flies (there like fruit flies) swarming my tank...they seem to breed there...by the thousands...the only thing to kill them so far is when i buy feeders and they eat them...they are also a good food source for the baby piranhas....but are they bad???? aside from making a mess of the glass they seem to be feeding my fish lol..

I have had those too.. I am not sure what causes them, and they will eventually go away...

I usually do a LARGE (60%) water change, and wait them out...

Also make sure the under sides of your lids are clean...

Do you have plants sitting on top of your tank???
I do, and I have often wondered if this was the cause...

But I have no idea otherwise..

no no plants on top..infact there are no real plants in any of my tanks...thats a venture for the future.

like i said the only thing that has worked so far is to by 50 feeders and let them do the work

Not quite the same thing, but a few months ago, we had a huge infestation of those in my entire house. My kids were kind enough to leave banana peels in my living room trash and the flies went NUTS! :pinch: I read a lot about it online, about how to get rid of them and such. The one thing all the websites had in common was that they LOVE wet plants and wet "dirty" drains (like from food particles and such). Maybe they are attracted to the smell? Is your hood dirty, maybe? The only weird thing is they never got into my tank. :S But what I did to eventually get rid of them was to put cups of a water/vinegar mix out and they all collected in that instead of my counter tops. :pinch: It took several days, but I did eventually get them all cleared out. Good luck!

We have had our Groucho (Tiger O) for over a year now...have watched him grow from 2 inches to pushing 11 inches! LOVE watching him swim around in his little 55 gal world. We also have a fancy goldfish and a black moor in a separate tank. We love our fishies!...[IMG]

I had an ant problem with my tank a few months back....so obviously aquariums seems to be ideal for insect breeding. I assume its the warm water coupled with perhaps evaporated waste buildup on the filter/hood/lip.
