Cichliddle_freak created the topic: 2 questions in 1 thread.

hello, i was thinking about getting 3 pictus catfish for my 55 gallon tank.
i have 1 small 3 inch oscar atm and he is growing really slow. he has only grown half an inch in 2 months or so. i know he will grow really fast soon and need the 55 gallons alone, but the pictus are slow growers and wont get in his way. i plan on getting a larger tank when my oscar gets bigger as well so size is no worry for my tank right now.

but my question is, do pictus catfish (or bottomfeeders in general) eat fish poo? or just the food that the oscar misses. cause i have heard of fish doing that. i am a "noob" so if this is a dumb question i am sorry haha.

and the second question is,
my oscar sometimes twitches his back side, kinda looks like he is shaking.
is this something like an intestinal worm irritating him? or is he just pushing harder to poo? haha

I don't think catfish in general eat poo. I could be mistaken. I know they're great at cleaning up after the pigs get their lunches. Really if it's excess food you want gone I'd suggest some Silver Dollars. They're like natures garbage disposals.

As for the twitching I think it's pretty normal, I've seen mine do it on occasion. Never really paid attention to whether or not they poo'd shortly after but I'd imagine it's more closely related to when we get a shiver due to tank temp fluctuations, hot and cold spots etc.

i have never really thought about the temperature being the cause XD
my tank is kept at about 78-80ish.
but ill keep lookin around for the best fish for my tastes.
i might go to my LPS to see if she can order a couple of them for me. its a very small pet shop owned by only the 1 girl and a volunteer. so if she doesnt have the fish i want, she can order special ones for me sometimes. i go there alot haha.

3 pictus will be fine in there... as long as you are planning an upgrade...

The shaking is believed to be a for =m of communication???? Mine do this a LOT...

As for the poo... In the tank that my pictus are in, I NEVER have large poos floating around, and I NEVER have uneaten food in the tank... I love those crazy cats.. Especially when their whiskers are longer than their bodies!

re: shaking

My mature Oscar has "tremors" ie occasional vibrating of the fins and tail especially when she gets that white circle around her eye iris indicative of what I believe to be Oscar "horniness." These episodes last about 1 second. Wishful thinking for "TWISTYSIS" since she has the tank to herself. Also her caudal fin (tail) becomes "bisected" into distinct upper and lower regions of dark and light coloration.

I haven't yet noticed any tremors of this sort in juvenile/immature Oscars..TIM

yeah my juvenile oscar occasionaly shakes his rear fin franticaly for a second or 2 and then stops. i obviously dont know the sex of the O yet, seeing as how Rex is only 3 inches at the moment.

I'm still kind of on the fence about this, I mean obviously the fish can tell the difference since they pair off. But it may be as subtle as body language that differentiates male from female. I figures at some point I'll plop in a piece of slate and see if they show any kind of interest just to satisfy curiosity.

maybe it just secretes hormones that the other O pics up? kind of like how humans wear perfume to attract another ^.^ haha idk, just a thought.
OR! maybe they just get "randy" one day and just go for it, and when they find out they are the same sex its just a really weird stage in their relationship and the other fish will never let them forget about the embarassing misfortune.
