tjwalley created the topic: Fish acting weird

I did a water change a week ago and my Oscar and Jack D have been acting weird ever since. While i'm home they spend their time at the bottom of the tank behind the decorations and the top half of the oscar will get "pale" and change colors. The Jack is extremely skiddish now also. I was thinking maybe a nitrate problem and am getting a test kit tomorrow to test for that, but what's throwing me off is when i get home after the house has been empty, both fish are swimming all over the place and the oscar is a DEEP black and looks very good. It's almost like they are more scared than "sick." i spend a lot of time at the tank watching them so they should be used to at least me being close, right? Not sure weither to worry about their health or if its just a phase that'll eventually go away?

They are pouting... (It is better to still rule out a water issue)
Mine have done this on occasion. They don't like it when you alter their world with a water change, or moving their decor around...

Get back to us with those water numbers, just to be sure!

I've had them for about a month now, i did move the decorations around when i did the water change/syphoning, so hopefully thats all it is. It sucks cuz it looks like i have a tank with nothing in it...they do a pretty good job of hiding! I'll get back tomorrow with the water #'s

Btw thanks to everyone for all the advice and answers, there's a lot of really nice and helpful ppl on this site! Thanks again

Definitely sounds like sulking to me. Mine well get mad if I even take the top covers off let alone dare to move the things in their tanks. As long as they're eating I wouldn't worry, they'll get over themselves soon enough.

Mine acted the same way, when they were small.
esp. when moving the decorations around.
I say test your water, like nicki suggested.
If waterparameters are good, you can rest assured that it's sulking or pouting.
Mind you , that behaviour has gone away completely, since my O's became big.
Nowadays i have to push them aside, when doing waterchanges, for they keep a close eye on everything i do in "their" territory. :)

Tested before the water change and everything looked good, nitrite was 0 and nitrate was was somewhere between 0-20 (used color coated strips) & after the new water was added the -ite stayed at 0 and -ate pad still had some red coloration but was MUCH lighter so i'm assuming it dropped a little. I picked up some water treatment stuff with nitraban too to treat the tap water. And most importantly i left the little divas' decorations alone! Lol thanks for all the input...was gettin worried i was gonna lose em! Just cant wait for them to swim freely while people are around the tank!

All my Oscars I've had sulk after I clean and change water. With the one I have now, when I am done, I turn out the light and within 5 minutes or so, she feels safe enough to get up and swim around normally. Then I turn light back on and she's fine. They're funny. A tiger I had would sulk and change colors. He'd be "weird" for a few hours no matter what.

My Texas decided to lay on his side and pout for a couple hours after tank cleaning this morning, big baby. Even my skittish Aro was out and about
