My Oscar seems to be unable to swallow food for the last week and a half or so except for rarely a small tiny bit. He obviously wants to eat and has never had any problems with being picky about his food. He just takes the food into his mouth over and over and ends up spitting it back out each time. I have a 75 gal tank with an over sized filter. Sense iv noticed the problem iv been cleaning the bottom of the tank on a regular basis to keep any uneatting food out of the tank. the ph and everything else seems to be fine from my tests. Is there a chance he could have gotten somthing stuck in his thoat and if so what could I do?

Difficult to say without a vid of the behavior or something. Have you switched foods recently? My experience with oscars and other cichlids is that when they first eat pellets or other hard foods they have a difficult time with it and spit a lot out. It seems it takes some time for them to figure out how to handle pellet foods.

Welcome to the forum BTW! :)

I agree with Jason I have noticed the same with pellet food, what I did to help them figure it out was to soak the pellets in a little dish of tank water for 2-3 minutes to soften the food then dump them in

For the most part iv been feeding him life line frozen food and dryed shrimp for an occasional snack and even more rarely live guppies I raise myself. I have pellet food as well that i use if i run out of life line and dont get a chance to pick up more for a few days and he has always eaten that as well with no complaints. I will try and get a vid and put it on here in just a little bit.

welcome on board! How long have yo had the fish????
can you give us additional info on filtration and tank maintenance?
fine water parameters means nothing to us...we need exact reading:
ammonia=? nitrite=? nitrate=? pH=? temp=?
juvenile oscar normally eats like pig... if he/she doesn't....
there most be something wrong!

hi there

1. what is the size of your oscar?
2. is he alone in the tank or what?
3. it is very good habit and practice to clear the bottom of the tank every now and then.
4. when my 7 juvenile oscars were about 1.5" they had some difficulty swallowing the pellets whole and some tend to spit it out.
5. however, when i "starved" them for a day.
6. they pigged out when i scattered limited pellets into the tank each time.
7. most of the juveniles have not time to "chew" but to swallow the pellet whole and rushed for the next pellet.
8. i feed them twice a day and no overfeeding!

I got him from a friend who had him in a 10 gal tank. He was about 5 or 6 inches at the time and has grown to by 8 or 9 inches in his new bigger tank in almost a year, so he isent a small guy. iv got one 6 or 7 inch pleco that iv had for 8+ years in the same tank.
My filter is aquaponics style system with a gravel growbed about a quarter the size of the tank with varius plants growing in it. There is a pump on it that goes off every hour during the day and every other hour at night that fills and drains the bed removing solids and maintains the tanks o2 levels. I don't think iv ever had it show any major ammonia or nitrites with the growbed hooked up and running. I only do water changes every few weeks or so but Iv been cleaning the tank more regularly sense iv noticed the problem to help get rid of excess food.

the current tank parameters are ammonia 0, nitrites less then 0.1 and nitrates are a bit high around 30 or 40. The tanks p.h. has been stable at 7.5 for years and the temps at 75
I finally got a camera so ill see if I can get a video today

I think mine is just spoiled. She is spitting out her thawed frozen cooked shrimp. I know she wants live food, but I do't have any. From what I hear, keep offering it and sooner or later fishie will be hungry enough and will eat it. Today she swalloed 4 pieces before spitting out more. She doesnt spit out pellets or sticks if hungry enough.Hope that helps you.

well after a weekend of searching to no avail for the cord for the camera im borrowing for the video iv realized I have no way of getting the video onto my computer.. I have discovered though that he can manage with a (little work) to get very tiny bits of non frozen or dried tiny salad shrimp down. Even with how small those are I have to cut them into quarters before he can eat them so it takes a min or 2 to feed him just 1 tiny shrimp. He is being more active and doing more then just sitting near the heater after a couple days actually eating something though which seems like a good sign to me.
