Tank created the topic: Plecos change colors?

I woke up for work today and noticed my pleco was "pale" ... i should have taken a picture but at 5am im not thinking. I've never seen this before but maybe some of you have?

Also, ive been seeing a few small white bumps under my Oscars mouth.. again ill have to get some pictures up. It seems like he has a extra amount of slime coat on it. They are both acting ok and todays a water change day so ill get the parameters BEFORE i do the change and post them up here and ill try to get pictures.

Since im rambling on and on i might as well ask if there is such a thing to much oxygen? i have so many damn bubblers in there you can hardly see the fish!! would it hurt to remove some?

Thanks everyone!

You can remove some bubblers. One is enough really... And if you make the filter output cause ripples in the water, you don't need a bubbler at all...

Post pics and water readings, lets see what is going on...

^^ yup nicki is right... you dont need all the bubblers they actually dont do much for your tank...

most oscars end up with a chin pimple...so this could just be that

I'm a huge fan of Plecos, and I have seen mine (past and present) change colors like that. Sometimes they do appear pale, and sometimes they will be darker colors. As long as his behavior is ok, I think he is just fine. How are the other fish in the tank? As for the air stones, I have one long air curtain, and the HOB filters that create bubbles and surface movement and my fish are as happy as can be. ;)

We have had our Groucho (Tiger O) for over a year now...have watched him grow from 2 inches to pushing 11 inches! LOVE watching him swim around in his little 55 gal world. We also have a fancy goldfish and a black moor in a separate tank. We love our fishies!...[IMG]

Pleco's do have camouflage colours. at least most of the common ones.
The fance Pleco's do not change colour that much, and in case they do something could be wrong.
Here's an example of my hypostomus in a stressfull pose, completely camouflaged:

And this is him, in a comfortable mood, while having dinner.
As you can see no pattern or discolouration at all!

What kind of pleco do you have?

ph- 6.0-6.4
Ammonia-0 -.25
nitrite -0 -.25
nitrate - 5.0 -10
and again im severly colorblind so bare with me on the readings!!

I have included a few pictures.. lets hope the work. there will be one with my pleco, one of both fish and one with the white slime coat on my oscar.

Now i am not sure if its because i put slate in and he/shes trying to signal some type of mating thing but every once in a while he/she will twitch its tail? Not sure why?

Also Nicki, i dont know if you remember but i posted a problem with planaria a little while back. well since then i actually took out and washed my gravel (this sucked by the way) and do a water change about twice a week... im still having a issue with them and ive really monitored feeding my O. Is there any chemicals out there that can kill these things?

@Free3tbzz no he has already passed that stage with the chin pimple..

thank you all again for your help!!

Ok, i just did another test! I did a 25% water change just a few hours ago.

Ph - 6.0ppm

Ammonia - at first was 0-.25ppm then i let it sit while doing the other ones and it went all the way past 8ppm!!!! :S

Nitrite - 0 ppm

Nitrrate - 0 - 5.0ppm

So obviously i have to do something about the ammonia and im seriously out of options. I had a tendency to overfeed so i decided to quit! i removed all the gravel and washed it and did a pretty good cleaning all around. but still i have planaria and ammonia problems! Should i look into ammo lock?

How long did you wait after the WC to test???

I would wait until the morning to test the water.. After the tank settles..
