Small Fry created the topic: HITH in my rescued oscar

I have a new to me oscar that I have had now for a few days. I rescued him from a pet store and now he is freely swimming in my 75g tank. When he was brought into the store I just happened to be there and he and another oscar tank mate where in terrible shape. They both were suffering from very advanced HITH disease. They lived at the pet store for about 5 to 6 months each oscar living in their own 20g tank. Best the pet store could offer them. I finally took one home the other day to save the poor bugger from his tank. ( the other was sold before I could get him too ) The question I have is he still has HITH but it has healed a lot while in the store but he is still suffering from HITH. I know it will take a long time to heal and he will more then likely have major scaring but I still want to try and heal this issue as fast as possible. Water quality is huge I know and has to be maintain to the utmost quality to ensure proper health and healing. What else can I do to speed this healing process along? Any advice people can give would be welcomed.

the pics shows the wound had healed already... with good water
and varied foods, all wounds will just be a crater scars... and will
look like the face of Tommy Lee Jones LOL!

Really.... well that is to bad. I was hoping to fix him up better then this but as I said before the damage was done prier to me getting him. He is still a handsome wee lad to me though :)
I do find his colour muted compared to all the other oscars on this site. They all seem vibrate and deep. My guy seems faded and lacks the luster of other oscars. Since he is 12 inches long does that mean they lose a wee bit of colour with age? Mind you up close he is very striking and his flanks look like dragon scales to me with the orange, greys and yellows mixed in.

ha ha ha... i made a wrong description... what i mean is that the wounds
will heal up nicely and will color back but of course, there will be
crater scars.... but being a fighter, you will be amazed on how he can
recover the color.... pristine water and varied foods will make your
fish vibrant and beautiful.... the crater will develop the orig color

look at the last picture...it has colored already but crater remains
visible near the fin base.... it does shows how bad his HITH before...

HITH is one gruesome looking affliction. I've had fish with it, did the homework and could find no definite answers online or anywhere else. I think that the many medicines claiming to treat it are "snake oil."

I agree that the answer is probably diet and water quality related, but it remains something of a mystery.

Smallfry; Your fish would be saying "thankyou Daddy" if they could.
