Deppy created the topic: 1 dead cichlid..oscar not looking too well

Hey guys,

been a little while since I posted last. Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas.

So this morning the lemon cichlid I bought had died suddenly. When i went to feed my oscar this morning I usually hold the blood worms in my fingers and he will come up and take the cube of them and swim off. Today it was like he was blind. He was gulping and biting but kept missing the cube of worms and kept hitting the glass of the tank. Tonight he wont come anywhere near the front of the tank and sits to the back at the very bottom. Usually he is very active. He eventually swam up toward the filter and sat against it and when I went near the tank it was like he was trying to swim away from it but didnt have the strength if that makes any sense. He ate a couple of feeder fish yesterday morning..could this have caused it???

the best way to help you is to know water parameters:
ammonia=?
nitrite=?
nitrate=?
pH=?
temp=?
tank size=?
filtration type and capacity=?
what size of fish=?

Can really only answer a couple of those questions because I dont know much about how to check nitrite/nitrate.

pH - 7
Temp - 27
Tank size - 10 gallon (Upgrading this weekend)
Filtration type - Tank maid filter pro 200 for tanks up to 20L
My oscar is around 7cm

10 gal tank needs 50% daily water change without cleaning the filter to
keep the water under check... and i believe you feed your fish daily
without removing any uneaten foods... the 3 items: ammo, nitrite, and
nitrate will tell what is your concern with your fish... without the
info, i suggest you diligently do 50% water change daily

I'm guessing the ammonia got the best of the lemon cichlid and it's now affecting the oscar. Buy an ammonia kit and a nitrate kit. You want 0ppm ammonia and under 20ppm nitrate. As Draco, said do 50% water change daily, and reduce the feeding to every other day until you get your new tank.
