evry1likesmike created the topic: my oscar is going blind

so i have had an oscar for over a year and i was gone during the summer and left my cousin to take care of him for me and he was only able to do one complete water change over the course of 3 months but she was alone in the tank during that time. when i came back her right eye was shot. it is all clouded over and she doesnt see a damn thing out of it. she is still an awesome hunter as long as the pellets of feeders stay on her good side. my water is in excellent condition and i am over filtering i mean way way over filtering cuase i also just got a cat fish and spotted gar to be tank mates. now the oscars other eye is starting to cloud over. it started as a something the size of a tear drop and all of a sudden it seems like it is growing i read online that she might of ate a rock but she has been eating and pooping for a long time. i was only feeding her pellets for about 8 months with the occasional shimp or guppies but not that often. could this be a dietary problem. any advice would really help thanks

Typically cloudy eyes are caused by poor water quality, we need some info before we can help:

-tank size
-filtration type & flow #(GPH)
-tank mates
-water test results (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH)
-water temp
-water changes (how much and how often)

get us that info and we have a better chance at helping you

It's difficult to say how severe this eye problem is, obviously the eye that is already clouded over is now beyond any kind of treatment. Oscars can easily live with only one eye, I had an Oscar with exactly the same problem as yours and he was Perfectly okay, it took him a little while to get used to feeding with only the sight of one eye.

The best I can suggest is to keep your water in pristine condition and feed your fish on high-quality foods that contain plenty of vitamins, you could even add vitamins to the food, I believe vitamin A is what you would need for eye problems.

This may also help. This vitamin can be found in green vegetables so you might help the situation by introducing vegetables such as peas into the Oscars diet. It may or may not eat them, some Oscars like them, some don't, but it's certainly worth a try.

Riboflavin (B2)
Functions: - vision, protein metabolism and enzyme functioning
Deficiencies: - photophobia, cloudy lens, dim vision, abnormal colouration of the iris, striated constrictions on the abdominal wall, dark pigmentation, poor appetite, anemia and poor growth

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Fairly sure cloudy eye is caused by poor water quality. Get the water quality back up to scratch and it should go away.
I inherited a Silver Dollar a while ago which was kept in really poor water conditions. I put it in my tank and it had really cloudy eyes. 3 weeks in my tank with good water and it cleared up beautifully...
