simplepso created the topic: Suction Cup - White Stuffs

Hi,

Does anybody have idea on what are these white like things that grow on suction cups/

Found on every suction cup placed inside the tank. Even the black colored suction cup of the heater has turned almost white. the airtubes is also covered by the same.

Readings:
Tank: approz 75G (L1.2M)
Filters: 2 External Filters + 1 OHF with (no mechanical filtration)
LiveStock: 2 Oscars (7inch approx)
N02: 0 (Chkd with strips, so no reading for NH4, assume zero as N02 is)
N03: 15-20
Ph: 6.8
Temp: 28.5-29.0

WC done twice weekly (20% & 40%)/ One Filter cleaned every 15 days. i.e. both filter is cleaned after a month resp.
Feeding once every day morning using Eheim auto feeder / Hikari BioGold, Gold, Staple, Excel - Rarely JBL XLSticks evening.

This is not new, it has been always there - but never mentioned. So just thought of asking if someone knows.
Even then i dont clean them during WC/Lot of work involved - cleaning each suction cup, airtubes means twice weekly i will have major WC work.

Any advices would be very much appreciated....

Could be some calcium/lime deposits from your water?

I'm not 100% sure but that would be my guess. I'm sure someone else will chime in soon. :)

can we have a picture? i mean fungus or algae (hydra) come to mind ... even if you don't have a picture clean it maybe cut down on the time you have the light on in the tank and also cut down on food that is in the tank will probably help keep it away

But imo it's still calcium deposit from the water.
Chalk is also calcium, and is also soft in water.
But it cannot harm your fish.
Problem is that the calcium gets on your windows, and the suction cups won't stick to the window then...

s/n I know most algae is green because chlorophyll is green and that is how it traps sun light but I believe there is white variety ...

I actually had this same thing happen. Im pretty sure it was just some algae growing around the cups (because it happens, and eventually WILL happen if not cleaned all the time) along with maybe some calcium build-up. Thats what I thought anyway, the white calcium buildup over top the greenish algae. Makes a weird color of white. I just took all my suction cups, and scrubbed them under the faucet. No problems since (:

maybe this is what you have, maybe not.

But...I tried. Hope I helped :)

It's not calcium. It's the same as the brown gunk you see in filters. When you wipe it off it is slimy. Cut back on the feeding to once a day, in the evening so that you can control the amount of food.
