I think we need to see a picture before we reach any conclusion on whether or not its a calcium build-up, or anything else of that matter

And also everyone here on this site will probably agree with me that when testing your fishes water, its recommended you use the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals: Freshwater Master Test Kit for superior test results.

trust me, I used strips forever, thought I was good to go, and had everything checked out. Until one day had ammonia spikes like crazy and my pH wasnt what the strip said it was. All in all, strips are "ok" but the API Test Kit is seriously the way to go!

I think it's a combo of both.
But anywayz, giving them a good cleaning ,will keep them clean for a good time.
