Matt_Zugibe created the topic: New Tank Syndrome?

Hello OFL Community, Im a new member and new to the oscar world entirely. Just some background info should be said before i get to the real question. I have been fish keeping for about 6 years now (Researching oscars for the past 4 because I'm fascinated by the behavior, and hunting instinct), I am 16 and hope to be a marine biologist because I'm very into studying fish, habitats, etc. Now to the question, I know different fish will gave different reactions to a new tank. A few days ago I brought my first oscar home. He is a 2" tiger oscar named arnold, he currently resides in a cycled 55 gallon long tank alone with an 80 gallon HOB filter which does 400 an hour. I will be adding a 5 stage canister (Formerly on my 55 G turtle tank). The tank itself is at 79 degrees Fahrenheit, oxygen is not a problem with an 18" air stone, another small air stone, and the HOB. All of the water parameters are perfect, but my oscar has not eaten yet. I feed Hikari Gold and I tried with some frozen brine shrimp but had no luck. Since then anytime I try to feed him I shut off all the lights leave for 10 minutes and come back to remove the food (to keep my water quality sound). How long does new tank syndrome last? Am I doing something wrong with my setup?

He'll eat soon enough, Leave the lights off and let him settle in. you can continue to offer food but make sure you remove it if he wont eat it.

Agreed With DBLN8. Also with your Oscar only being 2 inches, you may want to start him off on some flake food and see if Arnold takes it.

Welcome to OFL. Great to hear you did your research first. As said give him time. They are drama queens. Can we see some pics or a vid? When you say water parameters are good,., by what means do you test? And how did you cycle the tank? Just wanna rule out water problems for you.

Here is the tank with the lights off besides the LED air stone:

I tested the water with regular water test strips, and i took about 10 gallons of water from my turtle tank and let it runn for about 2 weeks

Ok. Well first off test strips are not accurate at all. Actually they are useless to be honest. Get yourself a liquid test kit. And using water from another tank will do nothing to help cycle a tank so your oscar is more than likely stressed from the water. You are doing a fish in cycle now which is going to be hard on the oscar. It takes a couple months to establish beneficial bacteria. Do some research on fish in cycling. Basically you need prime water conditioner and 50% water changes every 48 hours until the cycle is complete.

I will pick up a new test kit tomorrow thank you! And as stated I do know about cycling but currently I currently have nothing to cycle with, and I will start my first 50% change now! thank you for all of the information!

Hi, Matt. Welcome to OFL.

Here is the test kit that most of us swear by:

www.amazon.com/API-Freshwater-Master-Test-Kit/dp/B000255NCI/...id=1408740683&sr=1-1&keywords=api+freshwater+master+test+kit

Note that you need to pay particular attention to the instructions on the Nitrate test.

What you are attempting is a fish-in cycle with a single Oscar in a 55 gallon tank. This will require frequent partial water changes.

Do yourself a favor right now and purchase a Python:

www.amazon.com/25-Foot-Python-Aquarium-Maintenance/dp/B00025...r_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408797158&sr=8-1&keywords=python+no-spill

I know you're just 16, and I hate to hit you with two (probably expensive) purchases right off the bat, but Oscar keeping is what it is. Sure, you can skip the Python and tote buckets, but how long do you think you can keep that up, what with girls and all? ;-)

Best of luck on your tank and your career, and please keep posting here.

Funny you say "With girls and all" My stand is home made (12 cinderblocks and 3 pieces of 48" by 13" wood) and my girlfriend actually helped spray paint and put it all together. This summer I got my first job working in a fish store (Located in New York) I doubt anybody here has heard of it but maybe because we make tanks for clients all over the world (Beitals Aquariums). A while back i got my 55 Gal at petco during the dollar per gallon sale so right now my total expense is probably only around $250 so far so I'm really not in that big of a hole financially. I just ordered the test kit. On another note here is a question I've had for quite some time I've never gotten one but how well do cycling kits work and are they really worth it as opposed to throwing some shrimp in the tank and waiting?
