This summer I got my first job working in a fish store (Located in New York) I doubt anybody here has heard of it but maybe because we make tanks for clients all over the world (Beitals Aquariums). A while back i got my 55 Gal at petco during the dollar per gallon sale so right now my total expense is probably only around $250 so far so I'm really not in that big of a hole financially. I just ordered the test kit. On another note here is a question I've had for quite some time I've never gotten one but how well do cycling kits work and are they really worth it as opposed to throwing some shrimp in the tank and waiting?

Heh, I was 16 once upon a time. ;-) Your girlfriend sounds cool.

Working in a fish store as a first job (as opposed to fast food, etc.) sounds like you are living the dream. :-)

There has been a lot of recent discussion on this forum regarding the "cycling kits" (bacteria-in-a-bottle). Some claim they work, some poo poo them as "snake oil". My personal opinion is, while they *may* help cycle a tank faster, the best way to cycle is either doing a fish-in cycle with hardy fish (giant danios for example) or doing a fishless cycle with pure ammonia (can buy it at Ace Hardware). Cycling a tank with Oscars is not a good idea because O's are very sensitive to ammonia/nitrites. The only real way to "instant cycle" is to use biomedia from a filter that has been running for several weeks on an established tank.

Thank you both, I have shut off the lights in the tank along with those LEDs on the air stone. Also I have turned down the flow on the air stone because it was making quite some current in the corners and Arnold just gets pushed around sometimes but he has been much more free swimming since last night and has definitely found "his areas" he really clings to the little rock cave and behind the driftwood. I went to petco today and got my master test kit and got some ghost shrimp to speed up the cycle, the readings for my water are:
pH 7.6
Ammonia 0.25
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0

You put shrimp in with the oscar? The oscar will appreciate the nice meal lol. You don't need anything else in the tank but the oscar. It won't speed up the cycle. I think what you may have read is people using raw uncooked shrimp that is allowed to rot in the tank to do the actual cycling. You have a fish that will produce the required ammonia to do the cycling.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

Lol they were for a meal, i used to feed my turtle feeders but changed to shrimp because the chances of disease are less because they arnt in a tank like the feeders. I figured the extra ammonia would speed it up/ take some stress off the oscar lol. how do my levels look?

Bad news, woke up this morning to Arnold dead at the bottom of the tank with what looked like ick but I've never seen ick happen that fast. Sad loss but i will now take time to fully and probably over cycle the tank for my next O. Will also get an older one (3" or 4").
