When I first had my red hooks they had that same white milky look to their tails. Im not a huge believer in the 'natural' fish care products like melafix or pimafix for real disease but I used pimafix on them for this and it cleared it up nicely. This product does seem to encourage fin growth. It also however seems to lower oxygen content a bit so I would always add a airstone during treatment. If you have to buy this stuff look at the pond section, many times you can find the more concentrated version for the same as the regular aquarium stuff.

You could just watch them and keep up on water changes to see if that will do it but like I said the pimafix seemed like it cleared it up quick and the fins grew back in nicely.

That's nothing but fin rot...common on SD's when being moved from one place to another.....easily treatable with WC, WC, WC, WC.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

Yup. It will go away on its own with the clean water they are now in. They do have a tendency to nip each other's fins a bit as well which I'm sure doesn't help the situation when they are kept in less then acceptable water.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

One of them is looking pretty beat up and I think jmunroe is right I think most of the damage now is coming from the other sd's.....should I give them a salt bath ? If so how much salt how long to they stay in the bath for and how frequent do I do the baths ? Can I use a 5 gal bucket ? Or should I use the 30 gal

I was advised to do marine salt concentration (3.5%, or getting a hydrometer and adding salt till it says 1.025) for 30 seconds - 1 minute, keeping the SD in a net, and taking it out sooner if it shows obvious signs of distress (thrashing about etc). Marine salt like instant ocean is what Jack suggested for me as well.

I use a 5 gal bucket with only 4L of water in it, and do the salt dips daily until symptoms clear up.

Guys could I just do 5 gal bucket with one or two table spoons of aquarium salt. It looks like 3 of the sd's are beating the crap out of one of them ? Not sure if its visible in the pic but I can see what looks like blood. Should I move this ine to the 55 for now until I figure something out ?
