Sorry about photo quality taken with my phone.Woke up to this today. A nice little head wound, will increase water changes to 3 x 75% per week until it clears up.Has happened before but not quite this bad ,the joys of owning Oscars.

Ouch, poor guy. Any idea what he bumped his head on? How big's your oscar now Ernie? if it helps any, Henry is just pushing 7inch now (all tail and fins though) and I've noticed that after he hit the 6inch mark that he pretty much stopped booping himself on things.

Even though there is a piece of driftwood in the tank, every time I have seen him spook he launches out of the tank and hits the glass lids. Wondering if I should replace with a piece of Perspex, maybe not so sharp? I have had him for about 9 months now and he is about 9" still going through his crazy teenager stage. Hopefully grows out of this as Henry has done!!

Sorry about Ernie's gash. Looks painful. I hope he recovers soon.

I find all of the stories I read here about crazy jumping oscars interesting (I can think of about half a dozen in the last few weeks). Mine has jumped a couple of times to catch food from my hand (I wasn't doing this on purpose but just trying to drop the food into him), but he has never done any crazy head smashing antics. Still waiting for his "awkward" stage to start and he is about 6 inches.

He did try to pick a fight with Darth Maul this morning though when I showed him the video of Jack's O. Kind of funny.

lol, that's awesome Poseidon. That's the jumping Henry does, though once or twice he has belly flopped the water when he's confused a water drop for a pellet. FWIW, Henry's awkward stage started when he was about 3.5 inches long lol so it varies.

Don't be mistaken ernie, Henry's still an absolute klutz, but he's always been pretty calm compared to some oscars. Most of the trouble he's gotten himself into was due to excessive curiosity or just sheer absent mindedness. He used to scrape himself on driftwood just by not paying attention to where he was going, and has never really been an easily startled fish. Even with w/cs he just views them as a opportunity to play "let's hunt hands!" these days. When my 2nd 6x2 was moved past his tank last Tuesday for the umbee, all he did was look at it funny while the SDs and sev freaked out and swam off.

If he does get a bit startled by something (usually Adie being a b****) his go-to move is to tilt himself vertically and slowly swim backwards while flailing. Good survival instinct right there. It's equivalent to you or I doing a handstand and moving away if faced with a threat, going "hah! You can't get me now, I am moving awkwardly backwards! GENIUS"

Re: perspex, I'd personally just stick with glass. Thinner perspex can warp if there's a temp difference between the air and the tank water (found that out the hard way), and there's still a pretty high likelihood that if he's bashing himself on glass, that he'll bash one of the support beams. There's also the added weight of glass which is always a bonus if you have a jumper.
