Lammergeier created the topic: Red Devil Not Eating

On Tuesday I had to bring home the last remaining RD that was in the fish lab, because it turned out that it hadn't eaten for the other people in the lab for 8 days and I wasn't informed about it

I've been working from home the last couple of weeks doing data analysis, but I'd been going in every weekend to do its w/c. The water was atrocious last weekend too due to all the excess food that was in there, but at least I know the cause of that now.

Anyway, it ate pellets I offered it in the lab on Tuesday morning (it only eats for me apparently), but since I've had it home while it's interested in food, it isn't actually swallowing any of it. I've tried every type of pellet we have here + soaking them in vitachem, and it just chews them a little and spits them out.

I'm wondering whether I should just assume stubbornness and just keep offering it what I have here until it gives up and starts eating properly, or try and grab the pellets that I had in the lab so it's at least eating something? This one's fairly small, ~4 - 4.5 inches long currently. My biggest concern is that it might be ill from the... smart things those other lab people did in my absence.

Water parameters are all good (0ppm ammonia/nitrite, <5ppm nitrate), but this little one is in my 55gal quarantine tank as I had nowhere else to put it. Bit too small for one RD, I know, but considering the circumstances I didn't think there was much else I could do for now.

55GL is acceptable for a RD. Bare minimum, but acceptable. B)

Do WC's as often as possible......beef up the water temp to 83F. Don't feed anything. Do this for a week. He'll eat. If he doesn't then we have an issue.

Thanks Jack, will do. I'd upped the temp to 26C (from the 23C of the lab water) over the last couple of days, so almost there re: temp.

I think I underestimated its size though. He'd be 5 - 5.5 inches, just looks ridiculously small when compared to my big RD (Daisy) who's in the tank above him.

The 55gal will hopefully be temporary, but it's good to know it's acceptable (even if only just). Whether I keep this little one or not is really going to depend on how I go with the workload of already having 3 RDs, the umbee and Henry and co. I really didn't want to take this one on as well, but we'll see. If I do keep it permanently I'll try and get a 90gal for it.

Just thought I'd update - warm clean water (as always) did the trick. Only starved her for a couple of days - she was begging for food constantly. Offered her the tiny lab pellets the other day and she pigged out on them, and now she's eating the small pellets we have for the umbee, and crushed up hikari gold/biogold as well.
