UNC-CH created the topic: What is this white stuff on my air hose/plastic pipe?

This is the same topic that was addressed in the recent thread:

www.oscarfishlover.com/forum/68-non-emergency-health-questions/231604-suction-cup-white-stuffs

... but no pictures were ever posted and no consensus reached.
I have the same white stuff growing in all 3 of my 2 gallon tanks that I use to house bettas. The filters are 3 diy sponge filters I made and the white stuff is growing on the 1" diameter plastic pipe and air hose. (Please see pictures).

In the first two pictures you can see the slimy white stuff growing a little on the hose and on the 1" plastic pipe (inside and out). The third pic shows it growing well on the black air hose. The fourth pic is under 50/50 10,000k/actinic blue light but it's exactly what it looks like ... that stuff has grown so thick you can barely see the 1" pipe.

What is this stuff?

BTW - the filter in the last pic has more growth because it's older. It looked like the others weeks ago.

It's bio film. It will slowly disappear over time as beneficial bacteria starts to colonize on every surface.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

Thanks. I didn't really know what biofilm was but I've read up on it. Very good to know it should go away once the filters get established.
